What do I need to consider if I anticipate needing a lease transfer mid-way?

Hi all, I’m a noob to leasehackr and leasing in general so please bare with me. I am located in Florida and plan on leasing a car. Due to work reasons, I might move out of the USA in 12-24 months. I will want to transfer the lease if it is not finished yet.

  1. Would it be better to get a 24 or 36 month lease? For a 24 month lease I’ll likely have less than a year on it by the time I look for a transfer, and 36 month could have 1-2 years.
  2. Should I structure my lease such that I have Zero Drive Off / Zero Due At Signing? This seems like the better option since I spread the payments over time and the new lessee will cover their respective time instead of me paying a large sum upfront that I don’t recoup.

If there is anything else I should consider please let me know! Thanks

Just a heads up: not all brands allow lease transfers, so check the rules on the cars you’re interested in first.

  1. I’d imagine the market for people looking at <12mo leases is smaller than people looking at >12mo leases. Sometimes there are also restrictions on how many months can be left on a lease before transfer (e.g. cannot transfer in the last 6mo of a lease). I don’t think there is one clear good answer here, you just need to weigh the benefits.
  2. This could be a good idea. The only negative I can think of is if it leads to a monthly payment that’s higher than average then it might be harder to sell later.

While neither of these are cheap, here are two other ideas for you to consider:

  1. Some brands offer 12mo leases (Porsche is one). You could string together 2 of them if needed
  2. There are monthly car subscriptions available where you rent a car with insurance included. Check out SIXT, Porsche, and I believe Volvo.

  • SETF

Similarly situated, I’d be more inclined to do the opposite… transfer into someone else’s lease with ~12 months remaining, and then regroup and transfer into another of the appropriate length at that time if needed.

Thanks for the advice y’all. I didn’t know about all the lease transfer restrictions. All the brands I was looking at don’t allow them. I’ll probably look for a shorter lease transfer or ~12 month lease.

BMW’s the best for lease transfers.

Simple answer is don’t lease. Buy a used Toyota, drive it for a few years, then sell it.
