I received a Taycan from Porsche Ontario, and used Lux Concierge. Both the dealer and lux were easy to work with and the car itself turned out great.
However, because it came from California and I live in Washington, the lease has been active since January 2, and it is January 26th and I still don’t have plates for it and can’t drive it. Is this level of delay normal when doing an out-of-state lease? I’m told it is due to WA delays, but the dealer didn’t send WA the paperwork until January 22rd. I’m coming up on the first lease payment without being able to drive it.
I considered the cost of trailering when considering the total cost of the 24-month lease, but not the cost of paying for it while not being able to drive it.
The dealer should have provided you with temporary plates until the permanent plates in your county were processed. They are able to renew the temporary plates until you receive your permanent plates. Follow up with the dealer.
I have followed up, the car came with no temporary plates, they said we need to even wait for the temporaries and they are claiming they have done nothing wrong and i just need to keep waiting for something to come in the mail.
All i get back is “The process that we have completed is normal for any out of state transaction that we do here at Porsche Ontario, you will receive you reg and plates any day now.”
I dont live in California or Washington but the same thing happened to me when getting a Polestar 3 (from out of state)- I didnt get the plates for 3 months (nor did I get renewed temp tags). I told the dealership, if I get pulled over, you are paying the fine which they said no problem I kept calling every Friday like clockwork and finally one day they mailed me the license plate for my state. In summary, keep calling and have patience.
The car should be registered in California until you receive the permanent plates in your state. They are required by law to issue temporary plates at the time of purchase.
I am nervous about this as well, they did mention “could take up to 60 day, but usually takes 5”. So is it reasonable to assume something weird is going on here? It’s only a 24 month lease so losing a month or two is pretty significant.
thanks everyone for your replies, my first time here.
The process may be normal in terms of the dealer applying for your regular WA reg/tags but that doesn’t explain why you didn’t get temp tags when the car was delivered.
I would call the dealer back and ask very specifically about your CA temp tags. Speak to a finance manager or someone in the back office, not your sales rep. Don’t confuse the issue with any delay in getting your regular WA tags, as it seems like that’s what the dealer is trying to fall back on saying everything is normal.
At this point I would be asking firmly (but politely) for the dealer to overnight you a temp tag as it’s been almost a month and you haven’t been able to drive the car.
You should have reached out to the broker too as they should know the process for out of state and be able to speak to someone at dealer to sort this out on the temp tag.
That’s what i thought too, but Andrew at Lux told me “If I didn’t set proper expectations on registration timing I apologize“ . This doesn’t feel super normal to me based on what I’ve read and the obligations of a dealer, but the manager at Porsche Ontario AND Lux is telling me it is normal, to deliver a car for a month without any temp ability to drive it.
The broker should still be the one going to bat for you in reference to the temp plates. Was it stated to you in the beginning that you would not get temporary plates, therefore you will not be able to drive the vehicle until your permanent plates arrive?
I was not informed ahead of time i would be paying for the lease without the ability to drive it and Andrew at Lux doesn’t see what’s happening here as a problem, aside from I missed the courtesy of being informed about this issue.
Were you explicitly told by the broker or the dealer, “you will not receive temporary plates?”
I’ve only leased one vehicle from out of state. It was via a broker. When I picked up my vehicle it had temporary plates from the state I leased the vehicle from. I am in Texas and the vehicle came from Louisiana.
Not told by broker, not told by dealer. Car just showed up with no plates. Neither broker (lux) nor dealer (Porsche Ontario) see any problem with this. Lux apologized for not telling me. Doesn’t seem normal to deliver car without plates for many weeks, especially when i took delivery at a parking lot several miles from my house.
I think you are getting corporate speak from the broker with the not setting expectations comment (assuming there’s not more to it). If the dealer didn’t send the paperwork until the 22nd to WA, you might be waiting another 1-2 weeks or more. I would push for the temp tag.
I agree that the broker or the dealer should have explicitly told you that there would be no temporary plates on the vehicle. That way you could make an informed decision on moving forward with the deal knowing you may not be able to drive the car for a while.
For reference, although my vehicle that I leased from out of state had 30-day temp tags, they did expire. But I contacted the dealer a few days before and they FedEx’d another temp tag. My permanent tag arrived about 5 weeks after I took delivery of the vehicle.
