Got a 2017 Loaner VW Passat SE for $250/Month for 36 months and 17k miles a year. Starting mileage 55XX
7 months in I started to feel that the car is shaking, Took it back to the dealership and they are saying that the rotors and brakes are worn out and need to be replaced. They told me to contact VW support and see if they could do anything. Dealership says I need to pay out of pocked for the repair which is close $1k.
What are my options here ? Dealer is located in OH. Since the car is over 13k miles its initial warranty does not apply for bad parts. The car was sold to us a new vehicle and not a CPO.
Thanks for any input received.
Edit: Also I did take it to another dealership in the area and they said they couldn’t provide warranty since they didnt sell the car and also said it would be better to take it to the original dealership. Secondly another problem was that the front right tire had a bulge popping which means the tire also needs replacement .
ah. there’s a reason why my cousins hate VW so much. They said nearly every few months some part of their car would break down and they had to repair it so often they vowed to never ever affiliate with VW ever again.
lesson learned: don’t lease or buy VW ever again!!
Typical wear and tear. Goto an independent and get it replaced for $300.
It’s a loaner/demo. People have beat the sh!t out of it for 5500 miles. Good news is… at least you won’t have to replace it again… I think.
By the way… you are going to have the car for 55k-60k miles on a former VW loaner? You are definitely a risk taker. I assume most people are scared of 36k on a Toyota…
VW new car warranty should be valid at ANY VW dealer. Someone is BSing you. Are you under 3 years and 36k miles? 13k miles rotor life is a defect. Take it to an independent shop and get an inspection done. Will cost you an hour labor but perhaps they can tell you WHY the rotors are shot. The dealer just wants to bend you over.
Also, file a complaint with VW:
" Where can I find warranty information for my Volkswagen vehicle?

You can complain all you want but you’re still stuck driving it until VW considers doing anything. As suggested just go to an independent and get it fixed on the cheap. I assume the fronts are all that needs replacing, the dealer probably told you they all needed to be replaced. Oh yeah and don’t lease these cars out of warranty, bad plan.
brakes aren’t that expensive or complicated, i agree with going to an independent and just get it done because you will spend endless amount of time fighting VW over this and might not get the outcome you want. If this was a bigger issue i’d say fight it, but it’s just not worth the effort or time.
this is the bigger issue. You’re going to be driving out of warranty for a long time and you already see how they handle things. Once the car really starts falling apart and you’re out of warranty you no longer looking at a cheap fix.
I don’t think VW lets you swap out of the lease either, you’re looking at a bit of a nightmare, even if you drive less because the clock prob stated ticking a year before you got the car so you really only have 2 years left of warranty on the car which means you’re driving it for a long time without warranty. Might wanna look into some extended warranty.
If you really drive that much, you should have leased a car that has 50k mi warranty, there are plenty of options out there.
True, they aren’t as terrible as they use to be. Late 90’s and early 00’s were pretty bad, turbos, window regulators, dash boards lit up like Christmas trees. At least this Passat has been around awhile, not the first model year.
Not sure about lease terms but I have had the same problem in my previous vehicle. This can be caused by many things including the brake rotors but I found that a dented wheel can create this problem really quick. This should be checked first and possibly repaired as it can easily happen to any car. A pothole can dent that thing right up. Also on my last car the shaking started a long slew of repairs from brake rotors -> alignment -> pully replacement etc It seemed every fix solved the problem and a week later the shaking would come back in a different form. Definitely check the wheel as this should be a lot cheaper than 1k.
