Vroom- Transfer of Liability

Hi guys,

Vroom is scheduled to pick up my lease tomorrow.
I know I need to remove the registration and plates. I will need to turn in my plates to the DMV. My question is how I fill out a Notice of Transfer of Liability form since I am not the owner of the vehicle and I am not transferring the title? Thanks.

I’m not even sure what that means. I have sold 3 cars to carvana/vroom and did nothing more than cancel insurance and turn in plates. You have all the proof that they took the car, what more would you need?

Which New York State form are you referring to?

Yes referring to the Notice of Transfer of Liability form. I saw a link to a form in California that seems pretty simple to submit with basic info needed. I don’t see this same form for NY. It seems to want me to fill out a bill of sale which doesn’t make sense to me.

There is a form that apparently has to be turned into the dmv to prevent the car from being liable for tickets and violations on the vehicle until it is registered in someone else’s name.

So you’re talking about a form that doesn’t exist in your state?

I am trying to figure out how I let the DMV know that I am no longer in possession of the vehicle and so I am not liable for tickets and violations.

Sounds to me like you’re worrying about something that doesn’t exist.

If the NY DMV wanted to be notified beyond the surrender of plates, they’d have a form for it.

Just because some law exists in California doesn’t mean it exists anywhere else.

How will you be responsible for tickets/violations when the car doesn’t have your plates on it anymore?

In California, the plates stay with the car, so you have to file a form with the DMV to let them know the car/plates are no longer yours. Since you take off and return the plates to the DMV in NY, they do not have a similar form.

Return plate first then cancel insurance nothing more to it.

This nailed it. Big difference in a state where plates stay with the car. No plates, no way to tag the car to you.
