Does anyone have experience with the 20" wheels on the XC90? I test drove both the 21" and the 20" and find the 20" much softer of a ride. But most available on lots are the 21" variety. Curious on real world usage.
Thank you.

Do take corners really fast?
I had a '24 XC-90 Plus Gas with 21" before getting into a '24 T8 Plus with 20" wheels. It wasn’t night and day IMO, but some incremental improvements on ride quality/softness & road noise. When looking at T8’s, I specifically looked for units with the 20s.
The 21"s look better, of course, but 20"s a bit more practical (particularly in snowly climates)
When in doubt, for the family car go for the softer ride.
I had the 20" on my T6 Rdesign and went 30k miles without having to replace. They did drive very smooth. More sidewalls than than the 21’s for sure. My wife had a 2016 XC90 and those 20" Perellis lasted about 25k miles. I know the new T8 is probably heavier so I would imagine on a 36k mi lease you might want to be prepared to replace.
Why does Volvo ship these with 21" wheels as the majority if the 20" is softer? Anyhow I found one near me but it is the platinum gray color. I’ve seen the undertone is actually brown and it looks brown in certain light. That is a turnoff for me. So the debate is: 20" with this gray/brown color or 21" in a color of my choosing (e.g. black or the silver/gray).
Does it have to be those two options? Are you able to expand your search to more dealers? Unless you’re getting an unbeatable deal and/or under extreme time crunch, why not wait to get the combo you want?
I’m getting a really good deal from a dealer in Chicago area (5 hr drive for me). He only has 21" wheel models (really hard to find a 20").
Went from 20’s in a momentum to 21’s in an ultimate (no air suspension) and honestly the 21’s feel softer. The nappa vs leatherette could play a factor, not sure if there were any other seat diffrences. Either way I don’t think the difference was enough to sway my decision. 21’s look better imo.
Just seeing your deal check thread. If your deal is still ~5% discount pre-incentive, you can do much much better. You’re in OH? Have you tried reaching out to @Benedetto ? Or driving/shipping from many of the DMV or Northeast brokers?
I have experience with both but after having 21s for a while now, can’t really tell the difference. Initially, I noticed the difference right away, 20s were more comfortable and quieter. The road grooving makes a difference too and 21s are louder to me on certain roads.
Well I think what happens is your brain gets used to whatever you have (like using the iphone plus vs. regular size). So unless you drive both back to back you won’t know what you don’t have.
Thanks for following up on this. I found a much better deal in NJ so I’m trying to secure a vehicle there and get it shipped. The question now is:
Options:
Blue - 21" wheels (this is my preferred color)
Black - 20" wheels (I keep reading black is good only when it is super clean)
Dark blues are only slightly better.
They are 90% configured by the dealership.
The recharge wheels sell slower than non recharge wheels.
20" wheels also take an additional 2.3 weeks to sell compared to 21".
Can you please share your deal details and dealer name? I am also looking to lease xc90 recharge ultimate trim, but the MF is too high for this month.
MF is def high which is why I went w a close out 2024 model. Had a little more discounting. I used Volvo Princeton NJ.
Oh I ended up at $773 for 15k miles with first month and all the up front fees paid at signing. Actually I haven’t signed yet. I’m debating 12k or 15k miles. Have to decide by Monday. I dont think MF will go down till October. What do you think?
Yes, I agree, MF will likely go down later this year, but your deal is not bad. Thanks for sharing the details.
This is surprising but good job! Never had luck with Princeton Volvo (or MB Princeton), always thousands more than other dealers.
