If I understand correctly, a car with ~8000 miles really only gives an extra $500 discount essentially.

Normally I agree but I am trying to figure out the formula so I can present the dealer with a low ball offer an just wait till the end of the year and see what happens.
The short answer - no one knows for sure. So just take what you are comfortable with.
