Vanity Plate for 2018 Audi Q5

This may be a dumb question but for the life of me I can’t quite figure out how to attach a vanity plate to the front of my 2018 Q5. So my Q5 came with a front license plate holder even though here in Arizona we are not required to have one. So I went ahead and ordered a vanity plate with the standard 4 screw holes 6 inches apart like the rear or standard DMV plate.

To my surprise, when I went to put it on, the front plate holder does not have holes that match up. You can see there are 4 dimples or depressions where the screws would go but this of course would require drilling into the plastic. So I could take the plate holder off, punch some holes into it for the vanity plate, and then use machine screws and nuts but the vanity plate covers up where the screw holes are to put the plate holder back on the vehicle. Hmmm?

So is my only option to get some threaded screws and use those for the vanity plate and hope it holds and make sure the screws are not long enough to hit the actual bumper (avoid scratches)? Any other options and just curious what is this front plate holder made for? Euro plates are longer and skinnier than this, right?

Have a look for a front tow hook plate on eBay or elsewhere. If you have front parking sensors you need to make sure it’s positioned in between the sensors. That way you can install and remove it with no damage to your car and looks much better. They’re normally about $40 though.

Have you tried drilling holes in the bumper? How about using zip ties to the front grille?

Just kidding lol … DO NOT do either of these …

Hey man – I’m having the same issue. Did you figure out a solution (aside from what you initially mentioned)?

Not really, the only thing I found is a universal license plate holder that is made of rubber and has several screw holes or openings that would possibly work but it makes the vanity plate sit lower so not idea. I did talk to my dealer and the other option is to just take off the plate holder and they have the missing strips to fill in the gaps under the plate but dang, I really wanted to put my vanity plate on.

lol I have the opposite of your problem. NJ requires front plates but no way in hell I am putting one on
