Understand that this isn’t a specific #’s question but I am grateful for the knowledge and input in advance.
Military guy in VA; Is it possible/likely/sane to think I can find a 1500 series truck in the high 300’s? Or should I be looking at Colorado/Tacoma size trucks.
I’ve been scowering edmunds and using the calculator with the limited information that I have, and I don’t see it happening. Then I find a thread where someone jumps into an AT4 for something stupid low.
I’m just trying to find a low cost deal, using a trade vehicle in my advantage (never thought I would see the day) and come up with a 350-400 lease for a daily commuter while I’m in Virginia the next 2-3 years. I don’t HAVE to trade the wife’s car in /do anything. But since she turned my truck into a Tahoe last year, I’ve been missing a way to haul stuff home from Lowe’s
Many thanks again for your thoughts, suggestions, rumors, etc
Think you did yourself a disservice with that thread title, everyone’s so tired of crystal ball-gazing, maybe that’s why you got no replies?
Anyway I don’t follow the truck market but there’s only a handful of search terms to use in the Marketplace section (F150, Silverado, RAM, Tundra, Tacoma, etc) to see what it will cost you after VA’s high taxes (4.25% tax on the selling price, which doesn’t include property tax which is billed separately AFAIK).
The left field suggestion is to haul Lowe’s stuff in the Tahoe, have anything larger delivered to your home, and find a commuter that’s more affordable when you look at your total aggregate costs (lease payments + insurance + gas + property tax etc).
Thanks for your service. LMK if any of that helped.
4.15%. Military may be exempt from property tax in VA, at least partially.
Edit: “who maintain a state of residence or domicile outside of Virginia”
Edit 2: this is for Fairfax, but probably similar for other counties
LEASE VEHICLES
Vehicles leased by a qualified military service member and/or spouse will receive a 100% state vehicle tax subsidy (PPTRA) as a tax credit on the first $20,000 of assessed value. The credit will be reflected on the bill, but the leased vehicle remains fully taxable on any remaining assessed value in excess of $20,000. Contact DTA to claim and document military eligibility.
The regular property tax is 40% on the first $20k.
Grateful for the response either way. Just trying to dig into it. Unfortunately for me - my locality of residence here is $4.08 per $100 in personal property. A $45k truck is going to suck in annual personal property. Another factor to consider.
$1,020 for the full first year, but will be prorated. So not so bad. The second year will be around $650. All considering 100% subsidy on the first $20k
Unfortunately VA is not good place lease vehicle, unless you find an unicorn deal or have/create a business to write off your payments. I don’t think you can find anywhere near less than $500 RAM 1500 or F150 current market conditions. If you consider Tacoma, @Jrouleau426 has great deals in driving range from Fairfax.
In his case - yeah, about $2k (depends on the estimated value of course) IF you buy on Jan 1 and return on Dec 31 3 years later. Otherwise, it is prorated, obviously.
