Buy it! You can purchase additional miles at inception in a per mile fee. Adds up quickly though.

You should buy a car

You can ballpark a 20k/year lease as a 15k/year lease plus 5kmiles at (15 to 25 cents a mile overage).

If a basic 15k commuter car lease costs you $200/month then what’s another ($62.50 to $105 extra for those extra miles). The extra amount is due at the end so save some money for that.

For ~$300 a month you should be able to find a number of vehicles that work.

The other thing you can do is to see if you can trade out of the lease maybe after a couple of years or so such that it costs you less than keeping it to term.

Also for what it’s worth, before Corona I was doing about 24k miles a year with leases. Now with Corona I’m doing only 16k miles or so.

Depreciation and maintenance are killers though

Better to do the highest allowance (18k?) lease on a mainstream brand and prepay the rest

What county/state do you live in? Our credit unions offer up to 45k mi/year and we do a ton of 18 and 20k/year leases. The classic line of thinking about mileage and what works best as a lease preached here isn’t always the case.

Benz or BMW cpo. Can do a multi year extension on the warranty

Sacramento, CA

I’m in sacramento CA

Hello,

I have leased many, many cars with higher mileage allowances, 3 with 20k/year and 4 with 18k/year. What it works out to be is it starts with 15k/year lease and add the extra 3k or 5k/year. When you pay for the extra miles up front it is much cheaper and usually worked out to an extra 10 cents/mile.

Only problem with this is; if you don’t use up all your miles, you wasted the extra cost. They won’t give any money back for unused miles. And, the car will not be under warranty the entire length of the lease. But for me it seemed to work out because you don’t have to worry about the value at end of 3 years. it will have higher than average miles but the residual is set.

I agree if you don’t mind keeping a car forever, then buying is a better option. But you have to be willing to keep it at least 7 years, and set some money a side for maintenance.

Another option is taking over a lease where the person did not use their miles and has more than 20K/year left for remainder of lease.

Sorry I do t have a CU that can lease in Sacramento yet. About 6 months out.
