Universal Level 2 charger recommendation

I bought an open box, never installed ChargePoint Home Flex (40A 6-50). 25ft cable and actually switched my TOU plan and setup scheduled charging, working well.

I was targeting Emporia, Charge Point, and Griz-le units, I looked for new/open box models on eBay, I watched a half dozen, and one sent me an offer for another 30% off and I took a chance. No issue with setup or installation, working great.

Lectron evses have been found to have undersized electrical connectors, etc. I have seen several people report them overheating.

For your requirements, I would one stop shop by getting an emporia

That was my original intent, but it’s also the most expensive one I’ve looked at.

It obviously isn’t an obscene amount of money, I was just wondering if there was a suitable option at a lower price point given (what I perceive to be) my fairly vanilla requirements.

I havent found a comparable unit at a better price point

I got a 48A Emporia with a 24’ cable for $399 but it looks like they’ve raised the prices since I bought mine.
I shouldn’t have bothered because now I am rawdogging my free EA charging like a real hacker.

Have you looked at OEM flexible chargers (both L1 + L2 plugs)? Plenty of new or near new on both FB and eBay from literally any brand that has anything EV or PHEV.

I did think about that.

I’m using an Audi charger now, but it has to go back with the car next month.

I don’t want a used one from a complete stranger though.

You might be surprised how many are brand new or practically new still in plastic or bubble wrap.

Or find any used Audi charger like yours and return that one with your car, lol.

That’s actually a great idea.

This idea has some legs.

Check OfferUp. I bought an Emporia charger for $200.

AFAIK it’s pretty cheap in the grand scheme of things to create an app and/or code the firmware for schedules and virtual control. So the vanilla requirements don’t save you much. The way to cut costs per unit is go cheap on the hardware components and that runs up against your number one priority of not worrying about your house burning down.

Reviews for some lower-priced options included people complaining about the lack of a mobile app or a poor mobile app experience.

But a better example of where I thought I could potentially realize some savings vs. what was discussed earlier in the thread was not needing a weatherproof unit, since my outlet and my car are both in the same attached garage.

Depends on where. In your garage or outdoors? If it’s in your garage, your best bet might be to have the electrician install a 240v outlet then find whichever charger can plug into it. If it’s outdoors, it would need it be hardwired which may limit your options.

My charger was installed under my carport, so it was hardwired. I went with an Enel Juicebox 32 because I found a really good deal on ebay.

My cars are parked on my driveway. I bought a pulsar wallbox nema 14-50 from costco. I got this $30 nema 14-50 outdoor outlet from amazon. Both of them are installed on the outer wall of my garage. It has been fine so far.

The Tesla universal charger is the best, and it’s what everyone should own if you plan on having an EV or PHEV for a while. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Nah, just get j1772 ev charger. Buy tesla j1772 to nacs adapter if u need it.

Why?

There are plenty of options on outfit NEMA outlets.

That’s what my electrician said would be to code.

Hum… this may be related to your local code.

I’m having an outdoor nema installed nest week by one of my utility company’s electrician.

I’d I get another EV I’m already wondering where can I place the next free 240 outlet in my garage. :joy:
