Universal Level 2 charger recommendation

Total feed into house from service is 200 amps? Wheres the 50 go to?

I’m far from a true electrical expert, but my understanding is 4 gauge is coming in for service from street, which caps main panel at 200amps.

Unfortunately Tesla universal is the best. And I’ve been hating Tesla trash before hating Tesla became popular.

Update 2: 2nd guy says there is no issues to add dedicated circuit with 60A breaker. Said he’ll add it to a secondary panel and make it dedicated to charger only. Also said 100A service should be enough and I don’t need to upgrade to 200A service just for that.

The only thing that raised a red flag was his answer to my question on whether I need any permits from ConEd for this work. He said its up to me, and he can go this route - getting all permits 1st, but ConEd will come and force me to upgrade to 200A service before installing EVSE, and he would advise on just doing it without it. And that if we do it without getting permit, I won’t be penalized in the future. This sounded suspicious.

I’m gonna wait until QMerit assessment, and then proceed accordingly.

Both

Main

Secondary

This is the preferred charger that now comes with Honda Prologues, if you elect to do so. Have used for about 3 months and it’s been flawless. First EV so don’t know if I’m missing out on any features but the app has plenty of data/Intel for me.

Btw OP, check your fb marketplace or ebay, you may be able to find some cheap ev charger sold by those who got it for free from their ev purchase.

Good to know. Do you have it installed inside or outside? Mainly I’m interested in charging gun, does it have like a weatherproof cap on it? Because from the pictures I see it looks like it doesn’t.

Great tip, will do.

Except you’d need some legit proof of payment if you want to claim tax credit or local incentive/rebate.

I love mine. Got it installed last year. No issues with it.

+1 on that.

I’m sure you have seen this on the Emporia website: Emporia Level 2 EV Charger | NACS (Tesla) or CCS (J1772) – Emporia Energy.

Is that weather-proof cap that I am seeing?!?!

I have not, thanks for the link. I’m waiting for QMerit assessment currently, but for now the plan is to go with 50A dedicated circuit with 50A breaker so I can do 40A charging without loading my puny 100A service too much.

Yes, it is.

It is done.

Everything was measured and the cord reaches car’s charging port perfectly if the charging port is on passenger’s or driver’s back side since I always back into driveway.

And now of course I’m getting Lyriq, which has its charging port on driver’s FRONT side. :person_facepalming:

How safe are those 20 ft 50A J1772 extension cables I’m seeing on Amazon? Getting conflicting information, from “it’s ok if it’s UL certified from reputable company” to “you’ll burn down your house, car and half of the island”.

Or should I just start pulling into driveway head-first, which is not optimal for getting out?

Good morning, Licensed electrical contractor here.

NEC Code Article 625.17(A) reads “The length of the output cable shall not exceed 25 feet unless equipped with a cable management system that is listed and installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.”

In regards to UL certification, electrically installed items don’t need to be UL listed specifically. There are other approved listing agencies, but UL is the most popular. I don’t believe any EV extension cables would be approved by a listing agency because it would violate the NEC.

Me personally, I would just pull in head first for charging.
