TSRP: Toyota Makes Car Buying Even More Confusing for Consumers

Explanation from one dealer’s web site:

You may have noticed that Toyota has recently started using TSRP for their prices on their new inventory, leaving people to wonder, what does TSRP stand for? TSRP (Total Suggested Retail Price) is a new way Toyota is displaying pricing that gives a full picture of what you are paying, including base + dealer-added options + delivery, processing, and handling fee + taxes. “Total Suggested Retail Price ” is the new way Toyota is going about displaying pricing at your local dealerships so you, as the consumer, have an accurate knowledge of pricing before going through the complete sales process.

“Recently” and “new” are mentioned a few times here.

October of 2023? Really?

I recently saw this when looking at a Grand Highlander for my family here in Florida, $51K XLE, and I also see that Nissan is doing the same, showing the total price when looking at the Armada.

I would actually prefer that, As long as every dealer is consistent with this, it becomes pointless and a gimmick when dealers decide to exclude certain things.

How does RV work with this?

It’s impossible for this to be consistent for every consumer, and unlikely to even be consistent from dealer to dealer in many markets.

For example, which tax rate should they use? The rate where the vehicle is registered will apply, regardless of where the dealer is.

I’m 100% confident they’re not going to residualize Permaplate lol

TSRP is silly and old news. They probably have a think tank to work out as many possibly ways to help the customer while still abiding by their dealership agreements (nothing can be done without a dealership agreement being rewritten). Save money, and just use those funds as undisclosed factory to customer rebates that come once you fill out a factory direct survey or applied retroactively to those who use TFS.

What is absolutely out of this world though, is in the first time in recent history, Toyota and Lexus had sent out dealer circulars that would effectively change all electrified programs mid month.

January 19th all electrified rebates ranging from $4500-18500 would end.

Once the story got out, on Jan 17th they reversed course.
