Transfer Plates NY (Old Lease to New Lease)

Hi all,

I live in NY. I recently leased a new Hyundai (out of state temp NJ plates) and sold my old leased Hyundai.

I was told by a broker that I had an option to chose to transfer plates from old lease to my new lease car. I sent a copy of my NY registration card (old leased car) to the dealer. I never returned my old plates and waiting for the new transfer registration to be mailed from the NY DMV.

However, I noticed that my NY registration card for the old lease car states - HYUND NONTRANSFERABLE.

What does the “NONTRANSFERABLE” stand for on my registration card? Does it have to do with transfer plates/registration or it’s in reference to something else?

Can I transfer my registration and plates from the old to new lease card even though my old registration card states NONTRANSFERABLE? Dealer did not point anything in reference to this. I only noticed the NONTRANSFERABLE word after I got the new car and NY DMV docs were submitted. Waiting over a month now for the registration and no updates on my NY DMV online account. Thanks.

NYS DMV has everything you could possibly think of on their website.

Transferable registrations are for vehicles 1972 and older. You would use a transferable registration and a bill of sale instead of a title. Any car 1973 or older, the registration is going to state non transferable.

I was searching for the answer for days off and on. Went through the NY DMV too. Probably overlooked. Now I understand. The registration just states “NONTRANSFERABLE” (only because the vehicle is 1973 or newer) but does not affect the transfer of the plates and registration. Thanks !

your insurance card MUST read “replacement vehicle” for the dealer’s titling people to ensure that there is a plate transfer. given delays at NYS, you’ll be waiting for a new reg well past expiration of your 30 day nj temps. you’re not the only one w this situation.

Yes my insurance card does read “replacement vehicle.” It’s the registration stating “nontransferable” got me confused. Got it. Thanks!

you should be fine here. but you will be on expired temps for a while, so definitely expect that and don’t go after the broker / dealer when that happens. nys is around 50-60 days right now.

yes i understand. the problem is since this is a transfer plate vehicle I can’t cancel my prior insurance for my old lease. Insurance broker told me that they need the new permanent registration card in order to cancel old policy.

If I knew that there are such delays I would have went with new plates and registration and would have cancelled my old insurance after surrendering old plates. The only reason I went with transfer is because I thought that since I already have the plates the process of issuing new registration will go faster in comparison with the one receiving new plates. Now I am stuck waiting for the new registration and can’t cancel my old insurance.

that’s the dumbest thing i ever heard and it’s wrong. if your old lease has been grounded, it doesn’t require insurance. your new car requires insurance. i’d speak to your broker again and ask him why he’s telling you to insure a car that’s no longer in your possession. with a card that says replacement vehicle, you don’t have an insurance lapse.

this is Allstate. I asked twice and was told the same thing - they need new registration card to ensure plates were transferred. I will check with Hyundai too.

I live in NY as well and in October I did the same thing you did with my old Acura into a new one from a NJ dealership. The insurance on the old car was cancelled since the dealership purchased it and I had insurance put on the new vehicle. The dealer took care of everything. He told me hold to the NY plates and don’t put them on the car until you receive the NY registration in the mail. They also told me if the temp NJ plates expire call them up the day after they expire and they will overnight a new set. Luckily I actually got my NY registration in the mail a few days prior to the expiration of the temporary plates. It was pretty seamless. The only thing I had to do was put the NY plates on myself and take it to get a NYS inspection.

My insurance company is Allstate as well.

@blitzburgh92 - yes exactly same situation dealer purchased my vehicle. what documents did you have to give to allstate to cancel the old policy?

this is correct.

Like I explained, the dealer took care of it all at the dealership. I am looking at my policy online right now and as of the date I leased the new Acura, it is showing that car on my policy and the new car is off the policy. So I believe Allstate removed the old vehicle and added the new on the date of the transaction.

typo meant to say “and the old car is off the policy”

thanks all, I will definitely have to follow up on this.

I got my new car through a lease broker who got the car from a NJ dealership. My old leased car was bought by a different dealership also through a lease broker. I also spoke to HFM and my leased car is grounded.

I will follow up on this.

I may be wrong, but it is my understanding that in NY you do need to keep liability (only) assigned to the plates until the transfer registration is issued and the plates can’t be put on the new vehicle. Otherwise you’d be subject to a civil penalty for holding NY plates without liability insurance. That’s how it’s been explained to me in the past, but who knows?
