Toyota Lease Swap - Paperwork for DMV / plates? (NY)

Going on 4 months of a lengthy lease transfer process with Toyota. They are a nightmare to work with - very slow and very disorganized. I did a car lease swap with Mazda years ago and it was fast and smooth – nothing like Toyota! The car is FINALLY transferred to my name, but they haven’t sent me any paperwork or information on how to get new plates. Even thought its now in my name, I can’t pick up the car until I have my registration and plates.

I’m in New York, so I requested a: copy of the title + authorization from Toyota to register in my name. Is there anything I am missing? I want to be proactive with my request because if I’m not, it’ll likely be another 2 months before I receive anything.

Any insight or advice is appreciated.

The NY DMV sent me home last week empty handed because the leasing company emailed me scans of those two docs (which I printed) and the clerk’s supervisor said they were the correct docs but had to be “wet ink” originals mailed to me.

Oof this is exactly what I was worried about. They told me today they could fax it to the DMV when I am there. Thanks for the heads up.

did you end up finishing up the transfer lease process? @nicola212 @hhbean

I did and it was a nightmare. Took 4-5 months even with me following up weekly. They told me there was a glitch in their system which caused a delay, so perhaps this was not the norm - but it was a hellish experience and I regretted choosing the transfer lease route.

@nicola212
That sucks… I have to get out of my lease and I have a buyer from out of state so I just wanted to have an idea of what to expect.

Can you tell me if the original lease owner remains on the contract? I spoke to TFS today and they said even if I transfer I’ll be responsible which doesn’t make sense to me

That was not my experience – I assumed the lease in full and I am solely responsible now. The original lease owner is not on the contract. Mine was also in state but that shouldn’t make a difference.

Assume the buyer has good credit?
Might be worth calling back. I got a different answer every time I called…

@nicola212
They didn’t even asked… I just said that I’d like to start the lease transfer process. Lady I spoke to two weeks ago was supposed to mail out the application but I never received it.

Called today and they’re supposed to now email it to me. Maybe it has to do with the fact that it’s an electric car… I’m going to have to see what the contract says when I get it.
