Toyota Century coming to the US

Do we think this will sell or can we expect some sweet trunk money deals ?

If they are able to sell a Rav4 for more than $50,000, then selling Century for $170,000 should not be a problem.

It looks like a 2008 Cadillac Escalade ext front end lol

Could it be any uglier?

@Jrouleau426 should raffle one for his charity :stuck_out_tongue:

“One thing that won’t change is Toyota’s practice of having specially trained workers hand-make and customize the Century models in Japan. For now, Toyota said it wouldn’t produce more than 30 of the new Century models a month in addition to the existing sedan type it also continues to manufacture.”

I am willing to bet that 90% of US dealers will never see one if this holds true. Probably 25-40 a year will make it to the states and that might be overestimating.

put 100k miles on it in 3-4 years sell it for 90% of MSRP “it’s a Toyota, they don’t depreciate much”

also

“I’d buy it if it was a TRD PRO”

The article title is a bit misleading… Toyota hasn’t officially confirmed it will be sold in the US. The article simply says that it designed the car w/ a global market in mind and that it will sell cars outside of Japan based on customer demand.

I could see this being offered as a Lexus and as a “cheaper” alternative to, say, a Cullinan, and in the exceedingly small numbers (or even less) estimated by @wam22. And only for sale (not leased). In such small numbers, I could pretty easily see them being snapped up w/ wealthy collectors or those who are wealthy and want something really unusual. If I had that kind of $ and a chauffeur, I’d be interested.

Also, am I seeing things, or does one of the passenger doors slides out of the way, as in a minivan (View Photos of the Toyota Century SUV)???

They look like the knock off cars like the fake Rolls Royce’s or Range Rover’s you find on GTA.

Rarity by itself doesn’t make a vehicle collectible.

This would only make sense for Toyota to export to countries where:

A. There isn’t a massive fixed cost to certify for emissions and safety.

B. The nameplate means something.

USA fails to meet both criteria

Certainly point A is a huge sticking point.

For point B, does the “Century” nameplate mean much anywhere outside of Japan? I assume not, and yet the company is considering selling it elsewhere (even if not in the US).

I assume the engineering involved in converting a RHD car to LHD (given the small numbers involved) might further limit the non-domestic markets where they might sell this?

There are some SE Asian and gulf countries where land cruisers were status symbols, and there’s just much more awareness of Toyota’s lineup.

Like Celsior, Crown, Soarer, Mark II, Chaser and Vista don’t mean anything to us, but these and other Toyotas were premium vehicles for the affluent, and Century might still be something aspirational to them.

Exactly this. Will never come to the USA…

Ah yes, WSJ the pinnacle of automotive journalism excell…WAIT THESE FUDEERS do car car takes lol.

Century is a never coming to the USA, it doesnt hold a candle against the rolls brand catchet. These were designed for the Japanese Executives, who roll in much slower speeds (Japan aint the autobahn). It well sell well with their production goals and target market who need more legroom and less room in the trunk for their various “activities”.

Funny enough, this is based on the same platform as the TX/GH…

Would appreciate if you used a different abbreviation or didn’t abbreviate at all.

When you think you are getting a $170k fake Rolls.

To everyone else, what you are actually getting

My time spent in Japan I was impressed with some of the higher end Toyota vehicles we will never get a chance to enjoy.

That said, this will likely find its way to other parts of Asia (Taiwan, Philippines, China, etc). Definitely not the US.

A good example are the minivans there. Toyota has a large range of them. This one in particular would actually be a nice addition to the US lineup I think. I’m not a minivan guy but it certainly looks more appealing.

Nissan was the only mfg brave enough to try that my importing a Japan centric van with the Quest moniker…The quest no longer exists.

These vehicles have max interior volume but, they are square boxes that might not go over well with the NA crowd that already dislikes the thought of being seen in a minivan (some go and far as buying model Ys with 7 seats).
