The Volvo XC90 Hasn't Killed Anyone In Britain In 14 Years

Well now

No doubt it is a safe car, But the current gen of xc90 hasn’t exist for 14 years, right?

It has killed the senses a few of its owners from boring and horrible styling.

Wait a minute, this?

Is that a Volvo SUV? didn’s kill, but I am not sure it is any better.

Bet the guy inside was still safe.

I would assume they are talking about the prior generation. The real question is how many would you have expected to die. I am guessing the answer is close to 0. 54k cars over 14 years is not a lot. Through in that they are being driven by old people and the rate drops even more. The UK death rate per 100 million miles is ~.5. Average UK driver only does about 8k/year. You might be looking an expect death rate in the range of 10-20 for an average car. For a soccer mom car, you would expect even lower numbers.

0 is better than 10 but there is a huge chance element. Think about what 1 accident (say a semi hitting you car) that kills 5 people does to the average death rate.

You have the same effect when you hear that 95% of all Subarus build in the last 12 years are still on the road. Sounds impressive right? But you likely (and I sure don’t) know what percentage of BMW, hondas, MB, VW and so on are on the road also. I am betting for most cars it is well north of 90% with most of the cars not on the road being a result of accidents not durability.

97% built in the last 10 years. That’s what they say.

I haven’t seen true Darwinism in a long time.

100% of Ursus built in the last 100 years is still on the road and hasn’t killed anyone …yet?

So that means I am going to make a killing
a) I am 2 months from lease ending
b) I am 9 days from Sam’s club 30 day membership
c) My dealer has S90 T5 momentum
d) I only need 7.5k miles
e) I qualify for S60 extra loyalty
f) I am smart and handsome

Anything else I need to get this baby to 200 a month?

f) - first part is false, because of c). You need T6 to make a killing, just ask your dealer to trade for one.
Oh, you are talking about XC90? You don’t get extra $750. Only on S90.
Edit: never mind, you have S90 in c), so my statement about first part in f) stays.

This shows how statistics, when take out of context, can be very misleading.

I was going to write something similar on why 3,850 cars sold per yr is virtually meaningless but then I said f*** it, it’s not my job to explain why clickbait is clickbait.

Concord had 0 fatalities until one accident made it one of the deadliest airliners (statistically).

When you read that X number of people have died in 737 crashes/accidents in 50 years you don’t say that 737 Max didn’t exist 50 years ago, do you? Or if it was about Accord.

but the article title says "the current gen of XC90 maybe the safest car of all time … this is according new research… XC90 hasn’t killed in 14 year in Britain … It is trying to imply the current car safety by previous lack of fatal accident of a group of different cars in an isolated location. Just trying to point of the false in logic.

Off-ramp always contains the most riveting discussion. @max_g with the new picture

There is no logic in your “logic”. It does not say that the current gen didn’t kill anyone in 14 years, just that it is “maybe the safest car of all time”.
XC90 = did not kill in 14 years
XC90 current gen = possibly safest car of all time

Btw that line within the article was just clickbait within clickbait. It links to a video on an xc90 performing in the IIHS small overlap crash test. Since the test was created many vehicles have been designed to pass this test. It’s not unique to the xc90 and shows no other data to prove that it’s the “safest car of all time”

I didn’t even click on the link
And I’m not even suggesting it is the safest, it would be dumb.

I was going to point out the other big fallacy in the article but I guess no one read it. From the comments:

Actually, the headline is a lie. Or at least it doesn’t match with the study;

“…[researches] found no record of anyone having been killed in Volvo’s largest SUV.”

vs

“The Volvo XC90 Hasn’t Killed Anyone in Britain in 14 Years”

No one being killed in a Volvo is not the same as no one being killed by a Volvo.
