Obviously this guy hasn’t seen any of the Tundra deals on this site. The price comparison is out of whack too, other than fleets, very little consumers are buying sub $40k domestics. This popped up on chrome and made me chuckle. I’m not sure how some of these people get employed as automotive journalists or whatever they are.
Auto journalism is at an all time low (like all journalism).
I get Car and Driver and Motor Trend at home (in the gentleman’s room) and the reading is geared to people who do not own cars or own them and are only interested in screen size and power seats over engine power and handling.
Anyway, my leased Toyota trucks (have 2) are 30k in miles over 2 years for under $250 a month and cost me zero to own (Toyota care with Michelin tires).

I did not agree with the technical stuff but I did agree with that website’s choice of test “driver”
Gotta throw some click bait in there.
Never heard of them. Not sure one or a few people with a blog qualify as journalism.
But even for real auto journalists it’s impossible to write any article based on a presumed cost to lease the vehicle they are reviewing.
As we all know programs change month to month. Even in the same month there can be regional differences. How much dealer discount should they assume? Should they include loyalty, Costco, etc? MSD?
For the Tundra in particular you have to do all the above plus compare the captive lessor against at least two non-captive programs
One thing they did get correct is they are gas hogs;
-14.5mpg in a WI winter.
-10.5 towing 4,000 lbs.
-15.9 right now in late June in WI.

It’s a truck, whadya expect. If you want gas mileage, should’ve leased an Ioniq, I’ve seen single digit MPGs on my friend’s trucks.
I got mid 20s on my 3.5eb f150 quite often. The tundra is exceptionally bad on gas.
Will not argue on that one. However, EcoBoosts are one of the better MPG performers IIRC. 3.6l 1500s get like what 22 HW MPG?
Still better than a tundra
Is it cheaper
Will not lie, Tundra MPG is pretty trash.
The ain’t much better on
It has 10 yo tech, talking about milking the brand
Nice. I’ve tried, but they never deliver past my front hallway.
+1 to that but when towing 5-6k+ you are gonna get 10 mpg on a half-ton regardless of brand, it’s just stuff like the 6.2 gm and the 3.5 eco make it feel like you aren’t towing that much but you still feel it at the gas station.
hmmmm
Most half tons get better than 15mpg. My taco still gets 16mpg, it’s horrendous. Toyota has the worst MPG out of any manufacturer when it comes to trucks.
Oh the Landcruiser and LX is woefully bad.
I’m not disputing the tundra or tacoma are bad on gas it’s just he wrote towing 4k lbs gets him 11 mpg, it’s gonna be roughly the same give or take 1-2 mpg on any other half ton out there.
The problem is that Toyota and Nissan use old school v8s, large displacement and no forced induction. Epa restrictions are why bmw and mb got away from large engines in the amg/M brand, from 2007-2011 6.2 N/a was amg’s bread and butter, now all of their engines are like 4.0 twin turbo or 5.5 twin turbo before that. Ford is the only big truck manufacturer to apply that to trucks so far, ram is trying out etorque and gm had or maybe has cylinder deactivation but expect the new tundra to have some sort of hybrid option.
Those restrictions are being MAGAed away.
MAGAs greatest contribution in my eyes, are better school lunches. Honestly they’ve gotten SO much better. Call me a child (because I am), but we went from like veggie casserole to actual wings, pizza, and burgers.
