Texas resident leasing a vehicle from Utah tax question

,

I live in Texas and just signed a lease for a 2025 Hummer EV truck in Utah.Looking over the paperwork, it looks as if my tax payments were rolled into the monthly payment (equaling $1500).I just read on the Texas Comptrollers page that I will be assessed a 6.5% use tax of the full msrp (99k) when I bring the vehicle in to Texas.Which would be over 5k.The finance manager told me that I am wrong, and that taxes are only for what I pay in lease payments. Can anyone here give me some advice?I don’t want to pay around 6k to register this vehicle.Thanks.

You will pay the sales tax on the sale price of the vehicle when leasing and registering in Texas. The exception to this is if the bank is offering lender tax credits, which doesn’t happen unless you’re leasing from a Texas dealer and the bank is offering lender tax credits.

Texas has a very unique tax rule on leasing that the Utah dealer may have been unaware of.

Why would you expect some dumba** in Utah to know anything about Texas taxes?

That’s his job, that’s why.

Why would a salesman in Utah have any clue about registering a vehicle in TX? TX, VA, and MD are all special in this regard that tax is paid on the full selling price.

Basically, when you bring the car back to TX, you’d have to register it with the at your county’s tax office and pay all the associated feeds. This is why leasing for us TX residents is typically limited to dealers in TX as tax can kill a lot of deals that seem good on paper.

It wasn’t a salesman who didn’t know, it was the finance manager.

It’s not a Utah finance manager’s job to know about Texas.

Anyway I’m not gonna continue to repeat the same thing.

GL to you.

I mean what can you do now since you signed? It appears you are doing the homework after you signed? Did you call your Texas DMV to ask them? Maybe you get some credit from UT tax paid?

Finance Manager assured me beforehand that there would be no other taxes/charges in Texas before I signed. He was wrong, he’s making it right.
