Tesla Truck - Early April Fools joke?

Oh ye of little faith…

The multiple orders were several people from the same small group, so it was a relatively high percentage of people effected in a small sample size. That could be purely coincidental or it could be representative of the larger group. It’s definitely not definitive though.

Even if they’re all individual orders, I don’t think a $100 refundable deposit is a good metric for future sales. How many $1000 deposits on model 3s ended up being returned?

They never said. It was a long wait for for some in EU…I’m still not sure they actually finished that list outside US. It’s close to 500k delivered so far so it’s anyones guess how much of that was on the list.
What the $100 shows is interest…that’s it. People speculated for Model 3 due to the $1k being refundable…look how that went.
I’m puzzled by the reservation numbers too…

I feel like $100 isn’t nearly enough of a deposit to actually use as a metric. It’s much easier for people that are only the slightest bit interested (or impressed by the specs and not convinced the styling is real) to tie up $100 in hopes of things to come than $1000.

Either way, sounds like it cost Elon about $770M personally in lost stock value to make that $14M in deposits.

Seriously?! The stock was at 180 just a few months ago. Maybe you don’t really understand how this works…it didn’t cost him anything…he got his money and then some and still has his stock. He’s been cashing his options lately so that 6% dip means nothing to him. These sensationalist articles are just click bait. I wish i could lose whatever millions in a day like that…anyway, why do we care about his money?

well for elon the more they talk about him and his products in these click bait articles the more free advertisement he gets.

edit: I would buy that truck, pretty sure he hit 200k reservations this morning.

How true that is!
I was at the LA Auto yesterday and the only brand that had a stand and was not inside the building was Tesla. They were in a side parking lot and still had big crowds…fricking ridiculous! This truck saved them a few more months (years?) of advertising.

I know it’s not fair to compare given the Audi E-Tron is significantly more expensive and much more compromised as a product, but it looks like quite a number of people are cancelling their pre-orders. I do wonder what the conversion rate to actual sales is for Tesla.

Damn paywall

Here are my 2 cents. I think most of the Tesla line-up is ugly AF, awesome cars and concept, huge disruption! I like the new roadster in styling; as for the truck. F**K it, it’s cool. People will buy it or they won’t. It’s a risk but you gotta risk it for the biscuit. I think the truck is the coolest Tesla yet and it’s affordable. As for a leasehack, can’t wait to lease a showroom/showfarm demo. Hell I would even lease the failed demo truck with the broken glass for a good discount.

25% before incentives

Give us the summary…can’t read the story unfortunately. I took a hard long look at one yesterday…beautiful, a bit pricey but man it looks good.

I keep wondering if all these people knocking Tesla have actually driven one or owned one. I was given a test drive and show around a Tesla and TBH, I’m impressed. Tesla seems to be the only company that there cars hold their value really, really well and they can’t keep up with demand. In the early Tesla years I kept hoping some traditional and large auto company would have snapped them up. (Too expensive now)

I reserved one, the site worked well for me. I did it the night of the reveal. Doesn’t mean I will actually take delivery. But If no one else delivers a decent, high ground clearance, SUV/Truck with AWD - that’s my new commuter vehicle. I can’t see it, in it’s current form replacing the capabilities of my diesel F350 though.

One reason us truck buyers don’t like the Honda is that it’s unibody makes it weak. You can only tow 3,500 to 5.000 pounds with it.

I do hope that the released version of this truck is a little easier on the eyes. I thought Elon said he didn’t build ugly, slow cars.

I just googled the article title. Probably close to the same article (with a more EV friendly spin), but @Bjam can confirm.

There is also a Jalopnik article that is defended in the Electrek article.

I’ve driven a couple model Ss. I haven’t owned one, nor do I have any interest in one.

mllcb42 - I respect your opinion on it more than the hordes that haven’t… While I really like new tech, what has held me back until recently is charging infrastructure in my City and State. It’s is finally starting to get a little better. But for the foreseeable future we will always have to have a gas or diesel vehicle in our home fleet.

One thing that is interesting about the tech in a Tesla as there are a lot of parental controls, so even when your teenagers are starting to drive you get all kinds of info back on how they are driving. Plus a realtime mapping of where they are and how fast they are driving. I keep thinking about a current missing 17 year old we have up here. Can’t find him or his car. Keep hoping we will get good news in that he was found.

He doesn’t. The Cybertruck is ugly, but fast.

I think there’s a lot about the Teslas to like. I also think there’s a lot about them not to like. The specs on the truck are impressive. They’d be even more impressive in a desirable package.

Oh, i get it now…a dealer network complains about not be able to sell cars at msrp. F them! They been playing keep away from the beginning. We saw here last month how a small discount (actually the fed credit passed on) can make that monthly come down to acceptable levels (under $800) on the lease and generate interest.
