Anyone have any experience with the Amazon Tesla to J1772 adapters for home charging and tesla super chargers? They go from as low as $40 to over $200. Whats the difference? Is it worth getting the $150+ Lectron Brand over the $80 not known ev brand?
You may want to do more searching, but I think you’re mixed up on terminology.
The Tesla NACS connector supports both Level 2 charging and Level 3 Fast (Super) Charging.
But for vehicles that do not have NACS, they have the following:
Level 2 uses J1772
Level 3 uses CCS (which appears like an add-on to J1772, but is its own plug)
If you get a NACS to J1772 adaptor, it can only be used for J1772 Level 2 charging. You cannot use the J1772 at a Tesla Supercharger. @z0lt3c likes this brand.
Manufacturers and 3rd parties started rolling out NACS to CCS adaptors that could be used with certain vehicles at Tesla Superchargers (at this time Ford and Rivian). But, I think the safest would be to get the adaptor provided by the manufacturer (such as Ford’s or Rivian’s)… picking up a random 3rd party one seems risky and unnecessary at this time.
And last, you cannot use a NACS to CCS adaptor with a Level 2 charger. So if you’re at home, you still need a NACS to J1772.
Its worth getting a teslatap over the lectron one for level 2 charging, much less the even crappier ones.
Ooh ok… thanks. But why can’t you use the NACS to CCS adaptor with level 2? Like it wouldn’t charge at all or it’ll just charge at the same speed rate as the J1772?
Ok thanks i will look into those.
If you try to use a NACS to CCS adaptor at home on a Level 2 charger, you will find that the plug physically goes in and hooks up. But the Level 2 charger and vehicle will fail to establish a connection to begin charging.
BTW, my post was written with an American charging infrastructure in mind. Folks in the EU and other geographies have other plug types and more complexity to contend with.
I use the lectron nacs → j1772 with a Tesla mobile charger at 32 amps (max of the mobile charger)
It works fine for our phev and a friends mini cooper ev.
It was 100 bucks way back. It’s seen light duty. Has tons of reviews. Those 40-50
Dollar ones seem similarly built but who knows. If it’s for light use I’d gamble it. If it’s medium use maybe get the lectron. If it’s full Ev use better to just get the proper EVSE.
As I’ve learned buying lots of Chinese made charging wires from Amazon; it’s best to do careful research and not default to the cheapest because “they’re all the same and the expensive ones are just for the brand names.”
Get the TeslaTap mini Imported Edition from Amazon. Works as good as the regular but for a 1/3rd less the price.
For regular use would not trust any of the Chinese brands. Lectron is a hit or miss depending on your EV.
Lectron sells a bunch of evses with undersized electrical components and suffer from overheating issues at times. Personally, I wouldnt trust any of their products as a result.
