Temporary Plates when Assuming Lease

,

I am currently looking into assuming a lease and I’m wondering if it is possible to get temporary plates on the vehicle since it will likely take a few weeks to get the actual plates. I cannot find a solid answer anywhere. The vehicle is currently registered in Georgia and I am transferring it to NJ. Would BMW-F handle this, or will I just have to keep the vehicle parked until I have the physical plates?

Thank you in advance!

Which ever deal you buy from should be doing the plates for you and give temp tags. Only MA you can’t get temp tags

Contact your DMV and see what the process to get temp plates.

I’ll go ahead and do that. Thanks!

He’s assuming a lease, not getting one at a dealership

If you go to the NJ DMV with all the paperwork you’ll get permanent plates on the spot.

I am in PA and have assumed a few out of state leases. Once the deal was done, I took the executed/notarized paperwork to the DMV, paid for a new plate/registration and walked out with a plate. Then I set up the actual transfer of the car. So when I took delivery of the car I had a new plate in hand and was able to put a license plate on the car.

Thank you all for the replies! Going to have to pay the DMV a visit then.

I got my lease from PA and wanted to transfer my plates to the lease. The dealer gave me a temp for two months. Transfer of plates usually takes 1.

Or you could pay a visit to their website or call them first.

There are no temp plates in NJ for this scenario… lived through this… have to wait for BMWF to send the title to your local DMV and register the car.

Man hope NJ dmvs are better. They been mobbed in NY since they giving illegals licenses. Wish they had an online method for this stuff.

Looks like you can make a reservation online for certain things, not sure how well that works though.

I know about reservations. I meant more like not even have to show up. Problem is you could not even get one back in January. My father wanted to get the Real ID and we chanced and went to DMV. Never seen anything like that. DMV staff was just swamped and running like chickens without heads. Good thing they had these kiosks and he renewed it but again not Real Id.

Ya, they moved a bunch of people from Albany DMV to help, which must’ve been ‘fun’ for the employees. We’ll see how it is now, I’m going next week to fix up my title.

I have had this challenge a number of times when assuming leases… Thankfully BMW is faster than most, your stage 3 paperwork will trail by a couple of days… With that said I have done a couple of things depending on the lease, for the most part the person I am assuming from is good enough to leave their tags on it, if they won’t I just put a plate from another car on it temporarily, one time I even was stopped, explained I was transferring tags but paperwork had not gone through yet, they let it go…

Follow up: Took less than 30 minutes today to transfer the title, including 10 minutes wait time. Main Albany location, but I came in a few minutes after opening. Very impressed. I only had to fill out one extra form that I didn’t fill out at home.

Sure it is not real ID? VA DMVs have had significantly increased weight times in NoVa since millions of people need a new license for use at airport by 10/1 and you have to apply in person for them.
