When leasing from an out-of-state dealership (I live in CA), does the dealership calculate taxes for me? What about registering the car? Are there any out-of-state fees that might be due?
If a gas car, make sure its 50 state, and depends on how experienced is the sales team
Make sure the taxes/registration fees are calculated correctly before you sign. It’s a nightmare to correct after the fact. There are a few recent threads on here where this was not done correctly and then ensuing cluster fu#k it was to rectify.
Make sure YOU understand the way the lease should be taxed/registered and verify that all of that will be handled correctly.
I believe it was a on a Volvo; the guy leased the car out of state. They did not pay the correct tax and/or registration to his home state and his home state would not issue his registration sticker until it was rectified. I want to say it took a few months to finally register the car…as it sat in his garage not being driven due to lack of registration.
On a lease, most likely the dealership will want to facilitate your registration, either themselves or through a broker. It’s highly unlikely they’ll furnish a customer with a copy of the MSO — which is required to register it — for several reasons (eg you could export the car before registering it or potentially/accidentally titling it in your name and not the leasing bank).
