Tax on one-pay lease bringing from CA to WA

Hi all,

I’m looking to lease a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited RWD from SoCal since the offers there are much better. I have spoken to a couple brokers, one mentioned that they could do the deal if I had a friend’s CA address that I could temporarily register it to. (Another mentioned they have dealers who can register it to WA directly, but are currently too busy to handle the out of state)

What I’m wondering is if I do a one-pay, which presumably pays tax based on CA address, and I then bring it to register in WA, will I be taxed again, and if so how much? My understanding is that normally monthly payments would be adjusted to the current local tax rate, but I don’t know how that works if I don’t have monthly payments. Thanks!

Hello @nc5231,

I have couple of request. Can you PLEASE PLEASE provide those answers. (I am in AZ and can’t find good deal like those in SoCAL).

What broker(s) are you using
Did you find any broker(s) who can do other EVs too beside Hyundai Ioniq?

Please keep us posted about your tax question and other things involved in buying car in CA and registering in other state.

You would only be on the hook for the difference in taxes between CA and WA. Also, possibly RTA tax if you live in one of the applicable counties. Because it’s a lease, your monthly would change when you register your car in WA, because your registration is part of your monthly. You would call Hyundai financial and tell them that you would like to reregister your car in the WA state, they should send you all the applicable paperwork so you can take it to a DOL office.
I went through the exact same process when I leased a BMW iX and had to register it in WA.
If you are subject to RTA tax that will come out of pocket, so be prepared to shell out ~$800.

@nc5231
This part is wrong. He doesn’t have a monthly, it’s a onepay

He would have to pay for new License plates at a minimum but I suspect a Sales Tax Recalc will occur. It does but only if the tax paid in CA is less than WA tax.

California Thanks you for the free Registration. (CA does not refund Registration)

Correct, in one pay situation it would be out of pocket.

There goes $800 lit on fire

Right the main thing I wasn’t sure about was the one-pay part, since the tax difference usually comes out of the monthly payments. Makes sense that it would come out of my pocket.

Haha true. Even so, taking into account the extra tax and registration, the deal will still be miles ahead of what I can get here.

Dealers in the PNW are the worst. The dealership chains here enjoy basically a local monopoly environment that’s coded with the local legislation, so negotiating anything is next to impossible. The PNW dealership lobbying is off the charts, and barely anyone cares.

Hey @nc5231 I am trying to do a similar thing, lease in CA and bring it to WA. How did it go for you?

Hey sorry for the super late reply, realized I never replied to you. The brokers I talked to were OCauto and GCauto. I was pretty set on the Ioniq, so didn’t explore other options.

Unfortunately because I was out of state, they didn’t end up being able to help me. But fortunately, I found a Hyundai dealership to give me an even better deal!

Also sorry for the late reply but I just got around to registering the car in WA.

I requested documents from Hyundai to register the car in WA, which was super simple and just required filling out a very short form on the Hyundai Motor Finance website. They mailed me some documents, which I brought along with my original leasing papers to a vehicle licensing office, walked out with my WA registration and plates.

As far as tax, it seems I wasn’t charged for it, only the cost of registration.
