Over on some other discussion boards there are whispers that Porsche is also holding back any non customer-ordered cars at port (i.e., no incremental inventory cars), and for customer ordered cars, the full amount of the tariffs will be a separate line item and passed on.
So I’d add that to the impact list as well.
Social media also suggests the MB dealer meeting is tomorrow so there will be more to come…
Thank you for admitting this has NOTHING to do with building factories here or reach parity in trade against each country. All these ‘bounties’ will be used to justify the next tax cut for billionaires while all the others paid the higher price.
If tariffs force some nations to negotiate trade deals, then so be it. But, please don’t tell the average American that tariffs won’t affect their bottom line. It is pure fallacy. At the end of day, tariffs = additional tax on the consumer.
I live in a rural community that is very conservative. Lots of farm land and small business owners. I am yet to have a chat with folks about tariffs and how it is going to affect their bottom line. However, I won’t be surprised if people (who supported this current president) come out against tariffs.
Given that american agricultural exports are likely the easiest thing countries can hit back with, expect many rural individuals to regret their choice very soon, if not already.
Make no mistake, this announcement was a Lehman Moment. The administration is doing itself no favors with its hacks going on the sunday morning shows today. Global markets will continue to punish the US.
I said it before and I’ll say it again. The administration does NOT have the political capital to do this. It is already facing severe backlash across almost the entire political spectrum. Almost everyone, other than the most die-hard magas or just people who don’t understand how economics works (lot of those here), are rightfully angry. Seniors, who use their retirement accounts to live on, are pissed. They vote in record numbers, and they will absolutely smash the incumbents.
What you don’t understand is the administration is not looking for parity with every country. Just better trade deals.
And we don’t have low cost of living relative to wages at all. We have people straddled with debt. Most of the undeveloped world doesn’t have debt or has very little. Most own their homes, live in multigenerational families, some actually grow food still. Job losses aren’t new to them but it is to Americans for the most part and almost none own their home or have a garden. 2 things that really help without income.
As for the illegals statement. We have immigration laws like the rest of the world. Once automation comes there will be plenty of people willing to take lessor jobs. Especially if the govt teet is cut off. We don’t need to import more labor, we need people already here to not look down on these jobs that now are paying a living wage. Entry level jobs at 15-20/hr isnt all that bad in many parts of the country. Especially if you also educate yourself while working that job. People are lazy and think 35 hours a week is all they should work to be able to prosper, doesn’t work like that.
Name one besides penguin island or whatever you guys call it. Every country in the list has barriers vats tariffs whateve else they use to strengthen their country/govts balance sheet. While we just keep printing. Trump included. I didn’t like much of his policy in his first term and I don’t agree with the way he’s handling this but it’s necessary. Rather rip off the band aid then bleed out slowly which was the opposition plan basically.
Wait for oil to go into a bear market and these trade deals to pass then assess. We will have deflation if all goes to plan. Something we badly need
So why not negotiate in private instead of this reality tv-like shock and awe announcement. Is that how we want to do business with our partners/allies?
That’s a discussion for another day and another thread.
Because they are affordable. I am not talking about $200k+ “affordable” homes - more like $50k to $100k. Unlike America, where we take out a mortgage to finance our homes, folks in developing and third world countries save up and pay cash (for the most part).
That’s a broad statement, but I get what you’re saying.
We did have affordable homes relative to income not that long ago. What happened? Terrible fed policy (zirp) that enabled housing to be bought up for nothing by investors. Then the Covid bomb amplified it reducing supply. Now everyone is stuck and can’t move up like we usually do in this country. Starter homes are becoming forever homes.
Shocking the system is something I don’t agree with but he did try with Canada and Mexico previously and they didn’t want to
You got to remember we don’t know what we’re talking about he’s the economic scholar of the site. He is also a pollster and has called wall Street to middle America and there all regretting the way they voted. Don’t argue with him he’s right, and that is all you need to know.
This propaganda campaign almost feels eerily familiar to Penguin island, weapons of mass destruction, flatten the curve. Almost as if there is playbooks and the latest one is enacted.
Because you have to show strength not hide in a basement for months on end. He is transparent it’s all said and out in the open. Every meeting is displayed so you can’t misconstrue and impeach again.
Okay. We can agree about transparency since he said he was going to impose tariffs during the campaign.
As for the other political stuff, I am not taking the bait and going down that road.
Just clarify here - these are family-owned farms that have been around for generations. Some have animals like cows, chickens, etc.
As for the small business owners I know, they are mainly self-employed in construction (building of homes), landscaping (big business where I live), etc.
I personally know a few of his lawyers and they argue to do more behind the scenes and he insists on letting the public into every aspect of what he’s doing. Nothing in the dark, they are currently fighting him on a podcast he wants to put inside the whitehouse.
I’m like you I’m from very rural area with tons of smalls business and farmers they have been so destroyed by cheap imported goods and farmers have been getting killed forever. Most have sold off the land because they can’t compete or the former administration was paying them to not farm.
So a president that’s not giving special treatment to those that support him. No problem with that.
You do realize the last 6 maybe more Presidents ran on that same platform of cutting waste right? As well as many of the other platforms trump is actually taking action on. People were never against getting rid of the bloat in govt until now. Strange
The one who don’t understand is YOU. It’s obvious from the formula they used to calculate the ‘tariffs’. It’s obvious from how Donald talk about tariffs and how they (foreign countries) has been ‘ripping us off’. The funny thing is people like you trust a reality show stars who manage to bankrupt almost every business ventures he went in. FFS, that moron manage to bankrupt 3 casinos. You think this guy will pull it off. LOL. Dude doesn’t even understand what tariffs is. Similar to you claiming VAT as trade barriers when it’s just similar to US state sales tax.
You don’t know too much about Atlantic City huh? You should if you live closeby. He’s not the only person that got crushed there investing. If you start tons of businessss some are bound to fail. You guys grasp at straws. Parrot the msm like it’s some original thought of yours. Robotic
And I know what a vat is. And I know Europe has as much or more bloat then us they could cut reducing taxes for their citizens as well. Using Europe as some model economy is funny. They have way bigger problems. Mainly stemming from allowing the EU to form in the first place and giving up much of their sovereignty
