Sold out of state registered vehicle in CA. How to pay CA tax?

Recently moved from Oregon to CA and already established my residence in CA. I sold my car to Carmax in the Bay Area before I registered the car in CA. I didn’t pay sales tax in OR when I bought the car. How do I pay the sales & other taxes in CA? People in Carmax didn’t know how to but they used CA DMV paperwork.

Why would you want to pay ca tax for the vehicle I don’t get it…

You dont pay sales tax when you sell a car.

How long did you own the car before moving?

I owned it for 5 months. Moved to CA in the 6th month and sold it the same month.

To all: I wanted to make sure CA doesn’t come after me for selling a car that I didn’t pay taxes for when I bought it  There were not many resources online that explained what to do in my situation.

The one year ownership rule doesn’t help here, so I don’t know the answer. It’s such a unique set of circumstances that I suspect you won’t find a clear answer online.

You only owe tax when you register and title it.

Sounds like you’re clear because you never registered it and sold it before being required to register it.

Why would you do that?

To folks who asked why I moved to CA. Got a job offer in FANG which more than 3X my total comp. The cost of living in the Bay Area is not much worse than Portland, and state income tax is similar for my tax bracket. I plan to save and semi-retire in OR in a few years.

I had the reverse, I leased
a car had it for 5 months, Then sold it to a guy who lived in AZ, When they found out it was a CA leased car he had to pay all the sales tax.
he was not happy

What did he expect to lie on the taxes ? :joy:

leave nothing in your car, They break windows in that town like its a carnival game.

Or just roll the windows down with an alpine unit sitting on the pass seat

From what my bay area relatives told me, someone or something will be living in your car.

SF has become almost lawless in many ways. You know it’s bad when the progressive DA is recalled by progressives for being too progressive.

Rent is 2x in SF vs PDX!

Congrats on the new gig though.

Thanks for the tips! They will be handy when I visit SF! I live in Mountain View, which is a suburb 40 miles south of SF. This is a boring town with nothing exciting happening being discussed in this thread :joy:

Nowhere in Bay Area is safe from break ins. Just don’t go to a luxury store, buy something, drop it off in your car and go for lunch or something. You better get your ass home asap lol.

Driving in SF is like a rollercoaster. You know those rides where there is incoming drop and you see nothing ahead of you before the drop? yup
