I think the big question is what type of project car you are into. Would you rather a built 4x4 for off-roading? Classic muscle? Import? Are you looking for a comfortable cruiser or prefer HP over everything. Lots of options out there especially within your budget - just depends what you want out of it!
By “project” what do you mean? Are you going to restore to stock something old and cool, tearing it down and repainting the unibody? Do you mean an engine swap on a restomod? Do you want to build a motor? Or is a “project car” simply keeping something that needs lots of TLC to keep on the road?
Budget. All in for the finished product, or buy-in price for the chassis before the “Project”?
Finally any guidance re vintage and country of origin?
My personal go-to answer to this question was “Porsche 912” for a while and “Porsche 944 turbo” before that. You’d still be able to get into either for under 40 if you look, but likely not for long.
Lol like @anon65069371 mentioned, rotaries are def a bit delicate.
I’ve owned multiple enthusiast cars: e46 m3, e36 m3 (coupe and sedan), e39, e38, e60, s13, 3kgt vr4, and a lot more. After all these cars, I’m still obsessed with my FD. The closest car that I can compare was the hellcat with a manual transmission (only in a straight line because that V8 SC is just a blast).
I’ve had multiple FDs, multiple engines and a few rebuilds… and every single one of them was a headache… maybe the reason why I’m bald
But if I were to do it all again, I’d still gladly pick up that first FD with a salvage title and auto transmission for $3500.
If you’re in love with a car, no other car will compare. There’s just something about her that I can’t get over.
If you need advice or help with the FD, feel free to PM me.
