I’m located in NC and got a lease quote from a dealer in SC. There are a bunch of BS add-ons like “warranties” and ceramic tint, etc. However, there is a section for fees - can someone help decipher which of these are valid and which of these are not? Specifically interested in Electronic Filing Fee (I guess separate from the Doc Fee), Closing Fee (which I assume is the Doc Fee), and License Fee (not sure how this applies since I’m planning on getting temp tags as the car won’t be registered in SC). Thank you in advance.
If it helps at all, the dealer website fine print also lists this: “SC Infrastructure Maintenance Fee (IMF), tags, title, or any other applicable taxes and fees and are not included in quoted price. Price includes $599 Closing Fee. IMF is to be paid at the time of titling and registering a newly purchased vehicle unless an exemption applies. The IMF is 5% of purchase price, not to exceed $500. In addition to the IMF, there are fees associated with titling and registering the vehicle, as well as property taxes.”
They are likely doing your NC paperwork and charging you for those amounts, plus doc fee and filing fee.IMF is like sales tax in SC, so it is not applicable and they didn’t included it here. NC would be 3% on the payment for highway use tax (plus taxed incentives, etc.). It is hard to tell if that number is accurate without more info.
Lots of these quotes are boilerplate, apply to both purchases and sales, and are not exact numbers when buying out of state. You just need to make sure it is right on the contract. If they pay too much to the DMV for taxes, etc. because they charged you too much, you will be refunded.
If they aren’t doing DMV work for you, then most of these fees would be removed and you would just pay them in NC. If they are, everything looks close enough to me.
