Oh yeah big time
Some insurance offers free windshield replacement.
I think most cover free repairs for smaller chips but full replacement would be under comprehensive guidelines. This is what Geico’s policy is.
I recently moved to Travelers and they have glass replacement for $50 deductible on my insurance labelled as “glass deductible”. I am not sure how badly that would affect my premiums if I ever want to use it. I am assuming it might show up as a claim? I believe it doesn’t just cover the windshield but all the glasses.
Nothing in life is free
Maybe so, you can always change insurance if it jacks up your rate on renewal.
One may not. The first one may not. The example we were discussing was three in a relatively short time. This can also vary by state.
It’s good to have, use it if you need it, but one can’t expect to keep making claims and not expect some rate increase - whether it’s your risk rating changing or the pricing of risk for that category going up across the board.
Claims stay on your CLUE report forever, it’s a fun flashback if you’ve been driving for a while. I’m glad for the minor issues I settled without insurance over the years, and you won’t ever forget an instance where an ex caused a claim.
Rocks flying on the freeway are pretty common around here. I’ve never had a policy without $0 glass replacement. I’ve claimed a fair number over the years without my rate going up. Geico did investigate a dodgy glass repairer though and came out to document what glass was actually put in my car. The place claimed a much higher priced glass than they put in, though the Geico guy told me at least what they put in mine was decent compared to others he’d looked at.
I also had three separate vehicles totaled (one 6 mo old) with Geico. None were our fault and they didn’t raise my rate. It made me feel a little bad when I left them a year ago because the combined rate for home/auto became much cheaper at State Farm when my Progressive home policy shot through the roof.
So my cousin who is new to the country and bought a new Tesla Y. He calls me like “very minor” accident but the shop wants to total it out because they don’t even want to deal with Tesla. He’s bummed cause it was the “American dream” to get Tesla. Now he’s freaking out his insurance gonna go higher now. I told him in beginning to not get one but didn’t listen.
Really don’t know what fascination of Tesla are to Indians. It’s a crap ass car
It counts as a claim. I removed windshield coverage from my policy because of it. They also replace it with the junk glass and I had to cover the difference for oem on my 5 series lease (was still like 600 or 700 extra with the HUD)
oh damn, my insurance just went up 100% for the 6mo renewal. This is after a 20% increase on the previous 6mo renewal.
No insurance claims, no tickets, clean record.
He needs to go to Tesla ‘approved’ body shop and be shocked how much that very minor accident will cost LOL.
My parent’s tesla Y very minor parking lot incident cost the other insurance $7k+ in repair and another $7k+ in diminished value. We cashed both checks and live with the minor dent. LOL.
Yeah but he’s fresh off the boat. Soooo very “minor” probably isn’t minor. I didn’t look at the car nor am I gonna entertain it. Body shop said 23K in damaged meaning it will get totaled out but Tesla initial amount was $7,000
So GEICO has filed rates where they go up no matter what
"According to a report by S&P Global Market Intelligence, GEICO has submitted personal auto rate filings in several states that offer a “Welcome Factor” discount to new customers.
The plan offers a temporary discount that applies to new policyholders and would be phased out in the third renewal, depending on the state. So far, GEICO has filed this new discount in five states: OR, VA, WI, IL, and NM."
trying to understand the upside here (as i have a bimmer w HUD as well).
now that you don’t have glass coverage, if you need to replace windshield compatible with HUD, what would your options be? only out of pocket? file claim under comprehensive and pay deductible, and be in peace with the fact that your rate might go up as a result?
as an unrelated data point: 10-ish years ago i had windshield replaced through insurance on a 3 series that had HUD (it was geico i think), with a non-OEM brand, unbenownst to me. bmwfs dinged me badly at lease return at their rate for OEM replacement cost at the time, can’t recall exact $ right now
Most policies allow you to add in a rider to mandate OEM replacement equipment. Here in FL they say the windshield is going to be $0 but its both garbage glass and it counts as a claim despite the state’s insistence that it won’t. Didn’t jump the premiums that much though.
They also have the Auto Club insurance although that isn’t available in all states. Trouble with them is the home and auto is a package and you can’t break them up, so if they hike your auto and you want to switch, you have to drop the home as well. Sadly this is the situation we’re in now since they hiked the home up $3k and auto $1k.
I just got anxious reading your post. I put in a claim to have my windshield replaced, now after thinking and running the numbers it might have been cheaper to just pay for the windshield myself at nearly $1400!
I asked numerous people and read many articles and forums …even know an adjuster and they say that premiums do not rise after making a glass only claim.
This was the first ever windshield claim ever for me.
Anyone here see their insurance premiums rise after a windshield glass claim?
100%%%
After a 20% increase from the previous 6 month renewal??
Clean record??
What insurance company is this???
I replaced a windshield on my 2020 Tesla 3 couple of years ago and premiums didn’t go up… I paid Tesla for repair and after my $250 deductible they sent me a check for the rest. This is Connect by AMFM (COSTCO) insurance- I never had another claim before this.
