Returning BMW X1 Lease -Brake Light on

,

Hello all,

Just a quick question regarding my 2018 X1 that is due in November in Pennsylvania. The brake light just came on. I got it checked at Firestone and it is at 3mm for the front. My question is, do I need to get the brakes replaced so it can pass the lease end inspection? Do the inspectors get in the car and turn it on? Will the brake light being on be red flag on their list?

Not planning on driving this vehicle much until November (due to Covid-19) and would prefer to not get the brakes changed if they don’t check.

Thank you!

You will definitely get dinged on it. Not sure what BMW will charge.

How many miles on it? The Countryman and X1s are hard on their front brakes. I had to change my wife’s fronts at 18k miles.

Cheapest to just replace the pads and sensor if you are handy. One sensor (only need one on the front left) and pads cost me $40 shipped from RockAuto.

Thank you aigochamaloh. I am not handy, but maybe I can find a mechanic that can change the pads/sensor for much cheaper than what BMW or Firestone was quoting me at $500.

You said left front sensor, there is no right front sensor?

Take it to any independent mechanic it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to swap the pads and they don’t need to be OEM pads. Using the cheapest autozone crap is fine for a lease return. (Sorry next owner)

Thank you all for the suggestions. If I get the pads/sensor replaced, how do you reset the Brake warning light on?

You guys are great. Two more dumb questions.

Only 1 brake sensor for the front brakes?

And regarding tires, if I replaced the front with a different brand but same size, does the speed rating (V, W, or H) and the load range need to match the rear tires as well? Or just the same size ok?

You need to match the ratings of whatever OEM tires came with, not just size. If you also have run flats, you need to get run flats. Or you’ll get dinged for all four, and they’ll charge full replacement cost.

Thank you. So Good years for the front and Pirelli’s for the rears ok? Would Blizzaks for the fronts work? They are really cheap used for some reason

Maybe because they’re snow tires and it’s June.

Lease end charge is a flat $750 for overdue maintenance.

I just replaced the rear brakes on my 2018 X1 at 17k miles as well. Luckily, I have the upgraded maintenance plan so it was no cost. To your tire question- try bestusedtires.com. I used them for my 2015 3 series when I turned it in and they were perfect. 4 almost new contiprocontact SSRs for $400. You want to find a tire with the “star” on the sidewall- it means it’s a bmw- approved tire.
