Returning a leased car not in your name

Hello. When I was in college, my grandfather leased a Toyota Camry through Toyota Financial for me in his name because I didn’t have enough credit history at the time. I paid the down payment, I make every monthly payment, and I drive the car daily. After graduating from college in Nevada, I got a job in Tennessee. I moved out here with the car. Now, the lease is coming to an end. I want to know how to return a car that is not in your name when the owner cannot be there with you on the day of the return. With the pandemic, I’d prefer not to drive the car across the country and then fly back home to TN. I’ve looked at auto transport options, and it is too expensive for me. I know this is a unique situation, but does anyone have any advice? Thanks.

Have you called TFS or your local dealer to ask? I don’t think the leasee has to be the one to turn it in.

PS. I wouldn’t tell TFS or the dealer that your grandfather leased it in his name for you to drive.

Not Toyota, but my brother returned a Chevy lease for a family member. I honestly don’t think the dealerships care. Returned to the original dealership since the local dealership wanted us to schedule an appointment. Get documentation of landing. TFS can probably advise better though for their specific needs.

Yes, I’ve called Toyota Financial twice and neither time yielded a solution.

Call and ask the local dealer where you want to return it.

Not Toyota but I have returned a lease for someone else.

I think half the time they have asked for my id, but they just lookup the VIN (the registration/ins card:something with it printed on it will save you a couple minutes) and they write/sign/hand you an odometer statement. :cake:

Are you authorised on the TFS account.

Just touch base TFS let them know you’re intentions.
Get Autovin to inspect the car
And then get in touch with a local dealership that you plan on showing up for a lease return- the leaseholder need not be present but might need to sign a disclosure.

As far as anyone is concerned if your grandfather is in the loan and title it’s his car

Cough straw deal :mask:

The dealership does not care

Don’t sweat. I’ve had a family member turn in one of my leases. Nobody cares. You may need granddad’s signature at some point, though.

Make sure to get your pre-turn-in inspection done.

They don’t check ID when you return the car, just a place to sign.
Did you get it inspected yet? So no Gotchas?

No, they don’t. Suprisingly. Granddad has to sign the odometer statement though. Pretty sure they can fedex that.
