Sorry if this is a dumb question but I live in MO and normally lease either in state or out in KS. Normally the dealers send me the plates with the registration all taken care of. This time, the east coast dealership says that I need to register it on my own and I am curious on what type of financial responsibility that could cost me.
In MO we normally pay taxes on the monthly payment, we just add the county tax amount to the regular pay. To register, does anyone know if I would need to pay a big chunk of money? I would call the dmv but they are currently closed and i am pressed to mail the documents back.
They said they will provide a 14 day temp tag and then I will need to go to my local dmv to get it registered. I always had dealerships send me the final plate already registered, so that’s why i am hesitant to sign not knowing if I will have a huge bill.
What manufacturer? I’ve gotten leases from Texas, Georgia and Louisiana and they’ve never had problems registering things in mo (i’m in st Louis).
Should expect about $60-90 for the licence fee, that’s about it. The personal property tax bill comes at the end of the year
The dealers get very confused because the paperwork from BMW makes it sound like you need to pay the PPT up front, even though it’s not the case. They might be thinking you need to pay the PPT in full before registering.
The wording says something like “the customer will pay an estimated 2.9-3.5% of purchase price for tax”, not really clear that it’s something that’ll get billed at year end.
Funny story actually. On my BMW from Louisiana I put down $700 to cover first month payment, registration, and dealer fees. DMV called me up a month later asking me to come in (plates normally mailed) because they weren’t comfortable with something. Came in and they gave me $605 back in cash, saying the dealer sent them $700 minus some fees, so they refunded me the difference. Quite a nice surprise.
Our property tax up here is also pretty high. Ranked in the top 5 worst in the country last I looked. Thankfully, no vehicles. But I hear we’re gonna start taxing hybrids and electric cars now. Yay?
I registered a Volvo I purchased in CA at home in AZ. Dealer didn’t want to deal with out of state DMV and I didn’t really care. All you need is the Manufacturer Statement of Origin (get from dealer) and a power of attorney from leasing company to register it. It’s really not a big deal.
