Hey guys - I keep finding cars that are out of state (some are clear across the country) and the BMW dealers first say “we can get you any car from anywhere” then when it comes to it I get a lot of BS about the costs for dealer trades and excuses, including huge hike in lease price for no reason.
I want to pay for he shipping cost out of pocket myself (can anyone point me in the right direction to get a quote?)
What other costs are in it for the dealer who is doing my deal, and is it easier just to deal with the originating seller instead?
Yes, it is always better to deal with the dealership that has the vehicle in-stock. If another dealer is trading for a vehicle, they will only do so if they can make a decent profit.
You can also fly out and drive back. That mitigates any risk of damage in transit (and the blame shifting game between transporter and originating dealer).
True but I would only do that in adjacent states. Problem is I have a car I’m looking at in Vriginia and driving to California just isn’t possible at the moment (as much as I’d like to do that exact road trip!)
As stated above you best option is to work a deal directly with the dealer in VA, then either have the dealer arrange transport or handle arranging it yourself. I actually leased a 328 from a SC dealer and had it shipped to VA, and it was totaled on the way. I arranged transport, but other than a few worrisome days I was made whole with little drama (other than the transport broker keeping his share, ~$100).
Wow, what are the chances of a leased vehicle (paperwork finished) getting totaled during transport? Probably magnitudes less that a vehicle getting totaled normally …
What can i say i have shit luck with cars. Yes the transporters insurance handled it, but they were literally right up against their coverage limit, a shelby mustang was totaled as well and he was carrying 100k in coverage. It was so close they would not provide me a loaner, but at that point I still had the car i was replacing with the 328, so i was fine. MSD’s would not be a problem getting back, at least with BMW.
Really good point on their coverages and how much has been expended already in the available funds… I’d have to have the most awful luck but certainly smart to think about mitigating it
Sometimes a 9dealership is part of a “chain” of dealerships that may have multiple locations within the same area (lets say 100mi radius or so). In that case it doesn’t matter which dealership you deal with, they consider that inventory to be shared so even if it’s on one lot, the other one can get it as it’s part of their shared inventory.
