Private Party Sale Using KeySavvy as Facilitator

I just sold my BMW to an out-of-state buyer, and we used KeySavvy as the third-party facilitator.

I was first expecting this to work like an escrow service provided by a title company when you buy a home, but it is definitely a different concept.

KeySavvy is a licensed dealer, and the sale isn’t directly from the car’s seller to the buyer.

KS purchases the car from the seller, and then the buyer purchases the car from KS.

Since KS is a dealer, they’re able to facilitate the transfer of title and register the car on the buyer’s behalf. They even provide the buyer with a temp registration to drive the car home.

While I had the title to the car, if there had been a lien KS would have gotten the payoff from the lender, paid off the loan balance, and sent the proceeds to me. (If I had negative equity, they’d collect that from me prior to the sale closing).

After all of the steps were completed and the buyer arrived to inspect and pick up the car (he’d only seen it via FaceTime before flying in), he clicked a link to finalize the purchase.

Within ~20 minutes he received a temporary registration.

Shortly thereafter the money was deposited into my previously-linked bank account vis Instant ACH. KS’ fee was deducted from the selling price of the car.

The workflow was logical, chat support was quick during business hours, and the chat agents really understood what they were doing.

I took lots of screenshots of the transaction dashboard throughout the process, and I can add those later if there’s interest. For now, you can get a sense of the experience for both parties and the workflow from the milestone emails shown in the next post.

We each paid $99 for the service, although the $198 total can be allocated based on any split that works for the buyer and seller.

KS claims that the entire sale process can be done in as little as an hour, but my buyer had to book travel and fly in, which is why it took this long.

I made arrangements to have the title there by the day of closing, but you can also send it in after the buyer’s left with the car. Payment is dependent on receipt of the title, and given my assessment of the buyer’s commitment I decided to get it there a day in advance.

The title delivery was actually delayed by a day thanks to UPS not meeting their service guarantee. It was delivered roughly an hour before the buyer arrived at our house, and they processed it practically immediately.

It’s also a back door to access the used EV credit, if you qualify, since KS is eligible to apply it at POS. I’ve had mixed result, but more the byproduct of flakey buyers then the service.

Thanks for the review. Cool service. I’m surprised it’s only $198.

I think they’ll find that missing $300 soon…

Interesting.

If they are a licensed Dealer does that mean the 4k used EV rebate applies?

I wonder how they deal with Fraud, or do they only buy leases so its easier to prove ownership

They do identity verification for buyer and seller, and they research the title.

I owned this car, it wasn’t leased at the time of sale.

The title report checked more things than I was aware could be checked.

(More than a full page of checks like this)

Ive been looking to use this if i can find a private sale Fusion Energi for my son. He is done with school so can be emancipated and claim the credit.

You can run reg check. It’s why dealers pull registrations for loyalty checks besides submission as supporting docs to FS.

The website says they don’t work with leased vehicles. Is that true? Anyone have experience?

I am going to call them today to find out more.

Appears to be true by looking at your screenshot lol. What’s it say under learn more? Are you trying to buy it out yourself or have someone else buy out your lease? If the latter, no chance anyone would do that unless you had a sketchy agreement with a dealer.

Since i cant transfer the lease, i am essentially trying to have another party buy it out using his bank.

I also used KS a while ago and can vouch for their service. There’s an additional fee if your car has a lien. Forgot the amount but it was reasonable given the additional risk and complexity.

That’s Swag, not rebate!

But it’s neat, free swag is always good.

It’s very soft. I’ll probably sleep in it.
