Ah, I missed that part. I think if he directly sold that car he should have given a word of caution (I would have done that if it was a repeat client), I can see where your frustration is coming from in that senses, but sales are sale it happens.
Always put down a refundable deposit! Nothing to lose, and it can avoid problems like this. Plus you have a leg to stand on if someone actually does screw you over on the deal.
