Phantom braking/Parking sensor issue

Anyone experience random emergency braking issues on their Mercedes or even just any brand in general?

It’s brief but a bit scary at highway speeds. My cars been in the shop for 3 days now.

The parking sensors below 10mph also go off all at once in slow traffic. First Mercedes…

Other vehicles we have arent doing that. I tried cleaning them but it didnt seem to make a difference.

I don’t have the random emergency braking issues, however I do get the parking sensor goes off in traffic or bad weather (rain & snow) with low visibility.

Phantom braking and inaccurate parking sensors are a common theme with Teslas, especially with newer vehicles since they are camera-based (Tesla Vision).

Wouldnt the forums for your particular car model be a better survey of phantom braking?

I have the same on my Ioniq5… I dont know if its an EV issue or Hyunadi issue.
The phantam braking happens once every 2 months on average. I had taken to a dealer and they couldn’t duplicate it,… go figure.

Parking sensors going off while in heavy traffic seems to be a very common issue these days I think

Which ones go off for you? Have you ever had all of them go off at once?

I dont have the same issue with my other gas vehicle. It’s weird…

Tesla’s make sense, but I would expect more from Mercedes.

What speeds do you experience it at? So far, my Ioniq 5 has only had parking sensors going off at random, but not the phantom braking thankfully

All of them go off at once in bumper to bumper traffic & low visibility bad weather.

I’ve had problems with all the safety systems on my Volvo since AAOS 3.x. All I can suggest is to document as much as you can with days/times, photos and videos, and keep taking it back. Dashcam videos of the malfunction might help.

Just because they can’t reproduce it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. All the Volvo safety systems are now integrated through the infotainment and many errors it displays/logs don’t get stored as codes on the CAN bus which is their gold standard. If you get a hard error and are able to drive it straight to the dealer when it happens, that can be even more helpful.

Yes, my first EQS did it a lot. Install a dash cam and you’ll have video evidence you can present to MBZ corporate. Was the primary reason to lemon that car.

Also make sure your safety settings are set to medium or late vs early.

My lemon did it as well. Do you get red line all around your car on the display and loud beeping as if it’s under attack from all sides?

BTW, you may want to add Mercedes tag to the thread.

Im hoping I don’t have to invest in a dashcam but probably will if Mercedes doesn’t help or fix the issue here.

Thank you for the advice!

Were there any newer vehicles you havent experienced it with?

Will do medium :sob::sob::sob: I like having it a bit early just in case.

I guess theres another reason to have a dashcam.

Yes! red all around plus an occasional “some system is offline”

And then occasionally a side “attack” from both sides at the same time lol

What was the process for you? did you get a replacement or refund?

Full refund of everything paid plus DMV which seems to be a normal setup from everyone I saw except Capt Slow who somehow got his insurance premiums paid to a third party reimbursed as well.

Try to befriend your local shop foreman or service manager. Most of them like to talk shop to customers with at least some technical understanding but it really varies from dealer to dealer and person to person. I’ve had better luck locally with Calabasas vs Encino.

Finally, ask them to confirm that your problem areas are fully updated. I was told that they can usually target those areas one at a time vs blanket update.

Wife’s EQE did it on the freeway, no one around us, I mean at least 1000 feet behind and in front, 65 to 10 emergency brake. Then car went in for a seat issue, and the loaner EQE did an emergency brake backing out of driveway, and then took off forward into the front door of my recently remodeled house! Then backing out of the driveway in her EQE, did an emergency brake, this was on our way to drive the recently leased C43. Suffice to say I knew we weren’t leaving the dealer in the EQE. She would have driven a 1978 rusty celica (my 1st car) home before getting back in the EQE.

I think this is a Mercedes issue in general not just on their EVs. I had it happen once on the highway in the EQS which was the scariest and happened bunch of times locally at low speeds. Felt like the car sensed an object or something and braked as a result.

Ever since the battery related software update, car has been running significantly better (fingers crossed I didn’t jinx it by saying this).
