Peace of mind, to add or not add wear and tear packages

So recently giving it some thought and wanted to know how many people here when signing a lease opt in for that wear and tear protection packages??
I’m assuming that most likely less than half do opt in for that package. I have never purchased that option, however after the lease im in now I’m more than likely to purchase it on my next lease. Reason being is that 100000% of the dings and very slight damage to my car has happened due to weather and other fools who just like to open car doors into your new rides and others who like to hit and run. Yes i encountered it all so far on my new lease thats just a little over a year old now.

Damage done so far.

  1. Ding about size of half dollar on hood of car from weather damage

  2. Piercing ding on body line of rear driver side door

  3. Rock caused a nickel size damage to rim where it chipped the powder coating right off

And last but not least

  1. A grapefruit sized hit and run damage to front quarter panel, no note or anything left behind.

For the grapefruit sized damage I had quotes from $200 for PDR all the way up to we need to paint the entire front bumper to blend it in at a cost of around $1200-$1400.

The body line ding was quoted around $250 because of how hard it is to remove body line dents

Tire around $125-175 to re paint

Front hood ding around $125-$150.

So after all.done and said the wear and pair package that usually cost between $500-$1000 would have been worth everrrrrrry single penny.

So what was the total on damages from your inspection report?

Have never done wear/tear, extended maintenance/warranty, any add on in 20 years of leasing, and wouldn’t have needed them. I’m way ahead should I need to pay out of pocket for something. If the wear/tear is that big of a deal, I file a claim with insurance. That’s what I pay them for. Otherwise, I’d just pay cash out of pocket when I get the final bill. That said, I’ve maybe filed 2 claims over the last 20 years for excessive damage, and that’s probably generous.

I agree with this plan and it is what I do. Only caveat is if you are someone who doesn’t normally have a savings account to pay for this sort of repair buying the insurance might be worthwhile. Really, its like any insurance. You are better off self insuring if you can but if you can’t then you are probably better off purchasing insurance.

As for car insurance, it can cover most things but not everything (curb rash/some other wheel damage). Also it’s not without costs in terms.of increased premiums.

No inspection report yet. I still have until 2021 before it goes back.

Aside from that I am allowed $1000 worth of wear and tear if I decide to stay with same company

as for going with insurance. I have a $500 deductible and even though I was told by my friend who is an adjuster that since it was a hit and run and that my rates won’t go up im am NOT believing any of that for any moment

Technically, it can cover this under collision, but it wouldn’t be worth it unless you happen to have a 50.00 deductible for Coll. I’d argue you’re way overpaying for insurance if you do though.

I have emergency funds however I’m not spending it to fix a ding or two. I can cover all costs if I chose to but most say you would be throwing money away. People return cars with damage on it and get away without paying a dime as long as they roll into a new lease most times, some aren’t so lucky and get bills for thousands, I get $1000 worth of damage amd right now with PDR the whole car would probably be about $350

You’re going to pay for it one way or another. It’s going to be dependent on your insurance carrier and your history. I can tell you I’ve had collisions that didn’t cause my rates to go up at next renewal, but a comp claim on a 3rd deer hit in 2 years did.

You can’t really worry about rates going up if you need insurance. Think of the thousands you’ve paid into it and never used. It is what it is. You can always shop carriers if your rate goes high. Another way to look at it…either you pay for the peace of mind with the wear/tear policy, or you pay a potential increase should you file a claim. Either way, you’re paying for something.

I think you’re jumping to conclusions,. Just wait until you have the inspection at the end and then you start the panic and worry/fix it, could end up being cheap on this mystery car, you never know

Didn’t know that. But yeah would not help especially if you have it on multiple wheels since I imagine they would charge you deductible twice since it was two+ different accidents.

I imagine most LHers do. Guessing average net wealth on this website is several times higher than the American population as a whole. Wasn’t trying to single you out.

Well, it depends. If they are both on the same side, you could squeeze it under 1 deductible. I can’t think of a reason both sides would be rashed up outside of vandalism on 1 deductible though.

That said, wheel rash is usually around 100 to repair, so it wouldn’t be wise to do a collision claim for that either

Or just transfer it and pay nothing!

In seven leases:

  • I added a warranty for cars with turbos that would be out of warranty before disposition (3y/45k lease, 3y/36k warranty)
  • I added wear-and-tear to the current xc60 (which I cant swap so I’ll be in to disposition) because I have a big fiesty dog who rides in it, and the cost to coverage was :kissing_heart::ok_hand:t2:
  • I have never been charged once for excess w&t

I have made out on tire and wheel before, but I don’t usually get it. I always do the math on rims/tires for the car, just before I’m ready to sign, to see if math makes sense).

There are other threads on this topic (@trism loves how much people waste on “peace of mind”), it’s mostly unnecessary on a lease but like all things YMMV

I like your track record of leasing 7 cars and never once paying anything out of pocket after bringing the lease back

Did you lease again from the same company?

Do you get inspections days before returning the vehicle?

And what was one car you brought back that you knew they would have charged you something for but didn’t?

Transfer the lease or sell it to carvana or vroom?

(counts on fingers) I had one disposition fee waived because I immediately leased the same brand

always. in 2015 I lived in SoCal and had a client in Phoenix- autovin inspected my return in Phoenix but I was back in SD to return in. always always.

  1. wrx had a $15k repair from a rear ender, 2 rims and 10 tires in 3 years, etc. no charge. I added Subaru safe and secure on it because the last six months was out of warranty, and I got a prorated refund from that
  2. mazda3 i returned 6 (six) miles over and Chase never sent a bill, which amazed me because they are so petty, so many other ways…
  3. cmax #2 had some issues, but I also settled a lemon claim, opened in month 33, before month 36. i expected a bill and got a check.

Like all cars I get dings and scratches, but anything major or big enough to annoy, I fix.

I bought it for my mirai. $475. Will work out in my favor. Bumper has caught a few curbs, tires are needing replacement, parking lot damage to driver door. Worth it this go around
