Out of state registration & title delays (NJ or otherwise)

I’ve been seriously struggling with out of state dealers delivering registration and title work in a timely manner. Across 4 recent vehicle purchases, it took ~30 days for a Ford, ~50 days for 2 BMWs and a third BMW we are at 96 days and still waiting. The dealers are blaming the NJ DMV, but my DMV contacts are saying there is no such delay.

Interested in what delays are being seen by others. I’m tired of driving on temp tags and updating my EZ pass and parking permits every month. To me, it seems much more likely a mistake was made, by the 3rd party processing company, or that company is simply incompetent.

In my experience, from Q3 2021 to late 2022, the MVC was delivering permanent reg and title in 22 days on average

As a fellow NJ dude, I feel like a bunch of BS. @IAC_Scott BMW and Porsche Dealer were 30 days or less. I feel like they are just trying to make you don’t flip it. @AutoCompanion’s Ram dealer was 30 days or so. I had another ram dealer was 45 days but it’s not bad cause they sent us temp tags

I don’t think this is the direct intent, but it’s an indirect outcome.

I can’t transfer a lease without BMWFS having a title.
I can buy it out, but I can’t sell it because BMWFS cant send me a title.
I can’t refinance it, because the new bank wants title in 20 days.

I wind up making multiple payments on a lease that I never intended to make more then the first payment on. I’ll never get that excess interest back. The worst part is that it doesn’t feel like the dealers have any vested interest in helping to resolve. Even after 96 days they are just telling me “keep waiting, nothhing we can do.”

Where are they mailing it to? I normally direct them to send the work to my local office, I can drop in, check whether it’s arrived, whether it’s processed and when it’s on the way back to them.

We holding bags together

Approaching 8 weeks and still on an expired temp tag for my EQS. Dealer in NY, plate is for DC. I called every so often. First I got the “backed up due to holiday sales” run around. They that said I had to get my car inspected by the DMV here first (not true). Then they stopped calling back. I’m an easy going guy but just got pissed. I emailed the owner of the dealer group explaining everything and mentioning I will go to MB corporate and the BBB if I don’t hear back next steps by EOD the next day. The next day all hands were on it and that same day they sent all the docs to the DMV (this past Tuesday). They rushed it with their out of state plate company and I should have everything by end of next week-ish. Apparently nothing was submitted between Dec 17th (when I got the car) and this past Tuesday.

Long story short, just send an email to the dealer owner indicating if it resolved, what next steps are on your end (BBB, etc).

Friend is almost done his 13 month EQS lease and still on temps. What if it’s never registered, is that an issue at turn in?

At 139 days the dealer is finally advising they are in possession of my plates. Based on the carfax records, the DMV processed the plates on 1/30. So even after all this waiting, they sat on the plates for 2 weeks before getting around to “claiming” to send them to me.

At 91 days waiting on plates for my Ford Lightning. MD temp tags expired 2 weeks ago, and dealer is not offering another extension. No entry on Carfax, so I doubt the runner service (Regusa) has even submitted them. Are we still blaming COVID? As usual, nobody at the dealership seems to care. Just a matter of time before a NY State Tropper stops me.

Why would an MD dealer say they can’t issue another temp?

Isn’t MD capped at 2 extensions? Maybe I have my states mixed up.

Not that I’m aware of unless something has changed.

And suddenly, two days after asking them to escalate, NJ processes the titlework-

Not a coincidence.
