Is a 402t still a valid permit once you leave the state? It doesnt seem like it would be, which would be at odds with what Oregon is showing there.
I don’t see any way to request a 402t online. My experience with CA temp tags was they always had to be done in person, but it has been a few years since i had to get one.
They definitely have a lot more things you can do online now than you could, but in my quick sesrch through the site, this didnt look like one of them.
One of the first things i noticed moving to FL was on my first trip to the dmv, the people were actually helpful, things were quick and efficient, and I didn’t leave the building wanting to torch the place.
You have to open a “case” with the Virtual Field Office, call it whatever you want and you can “virtually” (see what I did there?) do almost anything online.
Yeah… the discount is offsetting the transport cost by a lot (18K off on a 100K car)… so my thought is to get it shipped… though it would be additional 1500 dollars for transport in a covered container
What if OP pay the CA Sales tax, and drive the car home with 1-way permit across 3 states? does he has to pay Sales tax again in WA during registration? or WA DMV will see car sales tax is already paid and only thing Obviously he has to pay plate fees and tag fees…which is approx 250 for Non-RTA and 450 for RTA zip code for SUV with GVWR of 5000.
Use tax is paid when the vehicle is licensed and registered in Washington. The use tax rate is determined by the vehicle owner’s place of residence.
When the owner can show they paid sales or use tax in another state prior to bringing the vehicle into Washington, they may apply the amount of sales or use tax paid against the Washington use tax. The owner may not take a credit for other amounts paid such as licensing fees, lessor taxes, or value added taxes like Canada’s goods and services tax (GST).
I would think that California could also refund his paid CA sales tax once he shows proof that the car is registered in Washington and sales tax was paid there.
I just called WA DMV, they mentioned that the tax that i pay in California will be deducted when registering the vehicle in WA. Now i just need to figure out that 1 day rule in california, because i don’t think i would be able to exit california in 1 day
Also, i am wondering if this is possible. I purchase 2 402t, 1 use it for transfering it from the dealership to somewhere north in California for layover. And the next one is used for the crossing outside california into oregon. ?
I have purchased three cars in CA (as an Oregon resident) and am about to lease my 4th. First one was a new car that I paid cash for. They gave me no one day trip permit. They licensed the car in Oregon for me (since it was new) Since it was a purchase, I paid CA tax on it. Second one was a used car cash purchase (and I paid CA tax). They gave me a one day trip permit and I handled my own Oregon DMV paperwork. Third one was a new car cash purchase. I took delivery in AZ and paid no CA tax. The dealer licensed the car in OR for me.
The new one coming next month is going to be leased. I called PFS and was told the tax will be collected on where the car is registered. Since it will be registered in Oregon, we won’t pay any tax on the lease (CA pays sales tax just on the monthly lease payment) and the dealer will license the car in Oregon for me.
I didn’t see a way to order one of these from the CA DMV’s website, but there is another site showing that they can be purchased online. Not linking here because it seems sketchy.
I’ve done a few lease/purchases from another state(CA, TX, PA) to WA.
One went really quick and smoothly to get my plates. The other two, CA and TX, were a pain in the rear. CA dealer didn’t think to send temp plates and had a third party in another state that handles the registration. The shipper wouldn’t deliver to my neighborhood, even though it was guaranteed to my door, and I had to pick up a car that I couldn’t legally drive. I think the fine for driving without plates is $500 in WA.
TX dealer took more than 3 months to get me plates. I was getting letters from my bank that they had not received proof of lien in time and would have to change my loan if they did not receive it soon. Not fun.
With all that hassle, I would still recommend having the dealer handle the registration rather than trying to figure it out yourself. They should arrange everything with WA to get you plates as well as provide a temp tag so you can drive the vehicle while you wait. Make sure you ask those kind of questions up front with your sales person or the finance manager.
You can have it shipped and avoid the worry about paying CA tax. For a standard car it should be $1000-$1200ish from CA to WA. Find a good broker/carrier unless the dealer has one they typically work with.
Or fly and drive to a dealer that can get you an exemption.
It’s an extra few steps and possible headache to purchase out of state, but it can be worth it for the right price or for a specific car. I wouldn’t waste my time on a run of the mill car or deal. If you’re not saving thousands or getting a dream car that you can’t get here, then it is totally not worth the pain.
Could even be cheaper than that to ship depending on where you were in CA and WA (north/south etc.), and how close the drop off and pickup each were to the 5.
Just shipped from CA to NYC and it was $2.1k door to door.
