Out of state lease deal questions

Hello, happy Monday to you all. I had some questions regarding doing out of state lease deals.

I reside in SOCAL and am unsure of the process of doing out of state deals. I’m assuming I pay the tax for that specific state and then any extra DMV fees here in CA after I let the DMV know and register it here? Has anyone experienced arriving to the dealership and they backed out and/or changed the deal?

I had other questions but I’m drawing a blank… but appreciate any advice/opinions. Haven’t decided on doing this but why not keep my options open.

Thank you

No. You pay your local taxes.

Happens all the time.

What make/model are you trying to buy from out of state?

If it’s a BMW as you have tagged, there’s no better place to buy it than in LA. I did a count a few years ago and there are like 20 BMW dealers in a 50-mile radius

You also pay

  • The delta difference between tax in the state you bought it and the CA tax.
  • Smog fees
  • If a 49 state car, well forget about it.

Haven’t quite decided on my next lease (have until feb/march… have to double check), but BMW is looking interesting. Unsure what BMW exactly but kind of narrowed it down to a 2/3 series… perhaps an m-lite OR M2 but I think an M2 is a bit out of my range

Ok, those are low-volume cars, so you’ll want to expand the search. But M-lite and full M cars won’t come cheap… good luck in the search!

Cali deals are notorious for the headaches associated with titling for out of state dealers. We, as the dealer, have to rely on the client to follow through with the Smog Check, Vin Ver, and other work it takes to get licensing done.

Ahh I see.

Yeah :/. Probably looking more towards an m-lite 2/3 series. Also considering a Hyundai Elantra N and possibly a MB amg (their base amg… forgetting the name). However, a friend said that the mb amg is kinda meh and has a cheap interior.

Yup, involves legwork on the person bringing in the car, and this caught me by surprise too, the first time I did it. Even new cars need a smog test (and be 50-state compliant?). Then a physical VIN check by dmv or a peace officer. Then paperwork goes back to dealer for titling/registration.

Factoring in shipping costs and all that…

Combining OP’s previous thread would add context and avoid repetition

Have you spent much time in the california section marketplace? So-cal has TONS of offers for BMW. I would be surprised if one of them isn’t lower than an out of state dealer especially once you factor in shipping/headache/your time etc

Ya I’ve checked it out. Also hyundai for any elantra N (none so far) and looked at MB AMG c class to see the pricing.

I have until mid Feb so I have a little time until then to test drive and decide. I will be going to the LA Auto show next month as well to look. Genesis sedan seems interesting but I’m more interested in cars with sporty looks but doesnt have to feel sporty necessarily.
