Out of State Lease- Colorado

Looking for guidance from any of you that have leased a vehicle from out of state and reside in Colorado. As you might know if you are in CO, you don’t pay registration fees at the time of lease; you get a postcard in the mail a few months later and pay the registration to your county.

I am working on an out of state deal and they are insisting on collecting the registration fee (about 2k) at the time of Lease to be paid to the State (the state doesnt even collect vehicle registration fees in Colorado, the county does).

Has anyone had any experience with this and know a way to fix it?

Hello! I reside in Colorado and have leased three vehicles from other states (Kansas, Idaho, Texas) and each experience was vastly different. Feel free to PM me and I can share what I know to the best of my ability. Good luck!

Since I’m in CO and do mainly CO deals, it’s hard for me to tell how dealers in other states treat deals going into CO. With that said, @paletz is 100% correct on how it’s done in CO. A CO dealer never collects registration; that is paid to the county DMV once title work has been processed.

Now with that said, when we do any out of state deal that’s not a cash deal to us, we pay for a service that will tell us how much to collect for fees, taxes and registration based on the type of deal and registering address. That service also gets plates for our customers and ensures there’s no hiccups in paperwork. My best guess is that they’re using that service (or similar) and when they input the deal structure and paletz’ address, they’re coming up with the 2k registration fee. @paletz is the 2k registration fee even accurate based on the MSRP of the car you’re buying? If it is, I would feel ‘ok’ paying it to them. If it’s way off then that’s another wrinkle to iron out.

If the dealer is using a service that says collect $X, I would think they’re going to not budge off that since they’d have no more recourse with the service provider if they admitted to not following what was stated by said provider.
