Doc fees at our dealership are non-negotiable. If we changed doc on a buyers order we would be subject to a huge lawsuit for charging everyone else $699.
Those fees are very reasonable in my opinion for a NJ dealer. $304.50 is true MVC cost for a BMW lease in NJ as a NJ resident. Everything seems spot on.
Your only change here would be having another dealer locate you the car to save ~$200 on the doc fee, but the dealer you’re swapping it from will charge your new dealer the same $200 just to swap it from them, which will leave you doing nothing but wasting your time and having to wait to get your car.
Both NY and PA have capped doc fees (both under $150) which can save you $500-$600 if you can get the same deal on a similar car. NY doesn’t have MSDs so keep that in mind if you planned on leverage them.
With all due respect to @bretbmw, those fees are far from reasonable. Mt Laurel BMW is $439 doc fee and $184 DMV, which includes title. However, rather than argue fees, get the equivalent overages taken off sale price.
I believe DMV fees cannot be marked up and even if they charge you more upfront… they by law have to return it if the actual costs was less. The supplemental title fee is the additional .4% added on to any new car sold (or leased) over $50K in NJ.
$699 doc fee is definitely the highest in NJ but seen it from several BMW dealers.
Thanks for the clarification. Did not realize they called the luxo tax a title fee. Very strange.
And, yes, I agree they can’t overcharge MV. But I would still take the total into account, and Mt Laurel is significantly cheaper no matter how you cut it. I don’t know why they undercharge on MV, but they do.
Yes we know the luxury surcharge aka yet another tax is real but why would the line item say supplemental title? Btw it’s on SP above $45,000 IIRC.
OP’s SP would have to be over $71k but there’s no information here. Since upfront sales tax is not DAS, it must have been capped. Interesting how they’re capping sales tax but none of the other items.
Also bizarre to just focus on these fees on a $71k+ car but not discuss the bigger picture (MP, TDAS, etc)
gotcha… wasn’t following your question. I assume the OP didn’t want to pay close to $5K down so just went with the lower cost items upfront.
No idea why it’s call supplementary title but that is what the State of NJ calls it. It’s not just a luxury tax as it also applies to fuel inefficient cars as well.
Good point to OP - Post the full deal if you haven’t sign yet because you may be worried about pennies but getting raked for dollars on the other aspects. If you signed already, the fees looks right although the doc fee is high and enjoy the car.
Picked up car yesterday. Was able to get an ol code before signing dropping monthly to $685. All other numbers stayed the same. Coming from a 340 xDrive msport, this car is a completely different animal. Thank you leashackr community for all the valuable information.
