Ottomobiles: The memorable cars of Turkey

Result of the import substitution policy of the state that lasted until the 80s. Most goods were manufactured in Turkey as licensed cheap replicas of the original foreign designs to avoid a trade deficit and lose the precious little foreign currency that the country had at the time. As a side note South Korea was a similarly-sized economy back in the 50s when they chose export promotion as their state driven economic policy. Now we all know Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Kia etc but I would challenge anyone to name a global Turkish brand…

Turkish Airlines

Haha I guess I should have said name a tech company or at least a manufacturer of some kind. It would be one thing if Turkish Airlines built its own planes but it is strictly in the service industry.

These seem to be doing well

My wife and I are actually spending a couple of weeks in Türkiye this month.

Cool, hope you get to go to the Aegean or the Mediterranean coast. I am Turkish and got my first graduate degree in global political economy. Hence my comment on how we (Turkey) chose the wrong policy path after WW2…
