Opinion on a manufacturer buyback

Background: Found a used Land Rover that is very close to the spec I am looking for. Appropriate miles for the age (not low not high) and appropriate price assuming a clean title (within 5-10% of others with similar miles). The car is still under the factory warranty for another 2 years.

When I started talking to the dealer, they disclosed that the car was a manufacturer buyback and sent me an inspection report - claims repaired no anomalies (related to the electrical and restraint systems)

  1. would you even consider a purchasing a buyback (it will come with a branded title, but JLR (Chase) will finance as if it were any other JLR product per the dealer)?
  2. if yes on #1, what discount from a similar year/mileage vehicle would you expect to pay?

Thank you for your guidance.

A new LR is a crapshoot. A used one that already had problems and was bought back?

I’d want far more off than “within 5-10% of others with similar miles.”

No. and Double no for JLR product.

And that’s the only reason I haven’t walked away, my prior and current JLR vehicles all had issues new that were subsequently fixed and if I had pushed it, likely all of them would have been bought back…

Thank you all.

As someone who has had a buyback, I wouldn’t wish that shit on anyone. Not knowing if it’s going to start. Having to worry about attorneys, loaners, and all that crap. It’s not easy to get it bought back usually so if it’s bought back don’t test your luck.

Ask for a copy of the warranty history with the full text, there is an abbreviated version and the expanded version that includes the dealer description of the defects. Once you read the full text you’ll be in a better position to evaluate whether it’s worth the potential hassle. Some cars are bought back for minor issues or the owner is high profile. Others are infested with gremlins that cannot be chased down until a special tech has been put on the case.

Having the full repair abstract will put the vehicle in a different context.

Have you tried to price out insurance on a buyback?

I have not - 1st step was getting over the hesitation of buying a buyback (which based on the comments here, is not going to happen)
