NY resident leased car from New Jersey, didn’t come with inspection sticker. Temp tags

,

I’m from NY. Leased an Acura from NJ, did not come with inspection sticker. Additionally I’m doing plates transfer so new registration will come in 3 weeks.

A year ago when a family member financed a new Honda from NJ that did come with inspection sticker,

I failed to realized at the time of delivery car didn’t have inspection sticker, first time for me.

Broker said I need to wait for new registration and then get it inspected. Do I have x number of days I can drive without inspection sticker or it needs to be done immediately

Google is saying I have till the temp tags, from NJ expire to get it inspected

Inspection sticker should come with your registration sticker, or if you are worried, you can get it inspected yourself. Out of state dealers tend to do that, no inspection sticker, because they are not in your state
It’s sucks, I know

There is no way you have a family member that got a car from outside of NY and the car came with an NY inspection sticker unless someone drove it to NY and got an inspection, which I’d really doubt unless this dealer was on the border of NY and NJ, and even then, still doubt it.

This is totally normal. An NJ dealer can’t preform an NY inspection.

You drive on your temp tag, and then, when your plates/reg come in there will be a temporary inspection, you have, I believe, 2 weeks, to get your inspection, or you could just go do it now.

Very simple, very normal.

I agree, I think they probably got it without sticker and got it from NY and just don’t remember it right

Thanks for confirmation. I’m good till temp tags expire basically.

Always a family member……

You left out the “many months later” part.

I have my plates on me, I have to wait for registration which they told me about 3 weeks

Once reg comes, I can put my custom plates on

And at that point I will get it inspected

3 weeks would be quite impressive. Especially if the dealer is using a runner service. Registration transfers are also more failure prone then new registration.

We’ve switched directly to NY tag agencies for NY clients, NYS has a program that allows for third party tag agencies to be able to do Plates/Reg in house, the same as if you were at the DMV, we can turn around NYS plates in 2 weeks using one of these direct tag agencies. NJ has no such thing that I’m aware of.

Oh boi
Little scary

I guess if I don’t get the new regsiration before temp expires, can I do the inspection on my temp plates?

I mean I will need new registration prior to temp expiring, otherwise how can I even legally drive

You can do the inspection anytime you want, I think some inspection stations are weird about doing it without a reg, but worst case, go to any new car dealer and they can do it no problem. I very frequently get inspection before the reg comes so I just get it out of the way.

Thanks again for the input

My local Benz dealer refused to do the inspection until the reg came in, claiming they have to scan the reg first. I knew that was BS but was forced to go back once I had my plates.

why didnt you just go to any gas station? you dont have to go to a dealer.

I did that once and they got oil residue all over my light headliner. Never again
