Looking for a 2nd car to pick up kids from school. Got a x5 45e already and love it.
The Nissan leaf base trim looks very affordable as a short commute car. With federal tax credit of 7500, it’s baslcally a 20k car. Saw online that a used 2019 sell for 29000 with 9000 miles which effectively means driving for free for 3 years.
Like to check with Hackrs if this is too good to be true. Found a local dealer that accepts $500 deposit with no MSRP markup (but no discount either). 3 months lead time. Buying option seems better these days.
No I would definitely not - however even if dealer collect the car at 20k 3 years later, that’s still effectively drive for free given the tax credit.
Actually just tried on Carvana with the used car Vin and it yields 25k. If this is true, then it means not only you can drive for free, but also get couple thousands back.
You’re taking a chance, but in this market a LEAF at MSRP is a pretty solid deal in CA. Especially since Nissan will probably lose the federal tax credit in the next year or two so and probably will just drop the LEAF once the credit fully wound down rather than make any effort to cut the price further.
Only if you traded it in now - as others have said, you can’t bank on its value in 2 or 3 years, especially with so many other more competitive EVs coming to market. Heck, a new Bolt with double the range is going to start in the mid-$20s soon. That being said, a ~$20k new car is a fairly low risk deal no matter how you end up.
Agreed. We’ve entering a recession. My 2 cents is that the used car market (that same one where people were purchasing old POS cars for 200% of their actual value due to Covid) is going to crash. One cant expect things to remain unchanged with new cars. I predict those values to go down as well. Expecting a leaf to be valued based on 2019 leaf’s value today may not pan out. Time will tell.
[1] past performance is not indicative of future returns
[2] their resale is not your trade-in
[3] lease residual has been a better guestimate of future values
[4] in normal times, Leaf resale has always sunk like a rock
Not to say you shouldn’t get one, but don’t bank on selling it at disposition for MSRP.
I would not think that an ev that has an abandoned charge port standard and 40kwh battery will sell for remotely similar value in 3 years as in this current non-sense market with skyhigh gas price. Well maybe possible if gas will be 10$ a gallon by then, but if that is the case america as a country would’ve been screwed.
