Hey Guys,
Love the site - ton of great information and knowledgeable people. Have a quick newbie question that I was looking to get opinions on.
Is it worth it to email dealers about a vehicle that isn’t on their lot? For example, say dealerships A,B,C and D are all close to me. Dealer A has the exact car I want (color, trim, options, etc). Is it worth it to email B, C and D and ask them for quotes on the car located at A? Or will they not want to deal with me due to the fact that the car is located at another dealer. Appreciate the responses/insights!
If Dealer A has an inquiry on a particular car, they are probably not going to swap it with another dealer to sell it to “their” customer. Anything is possible, but I wouldn’t do this.
Is the only difference the color? If so get quotes from all 4 dealers, use the lowest quote to price match the dealer that has the color that you want. Otherwise this seems like apples to oranges and not apples to apples.
It costs time and money for a dealership to get a dealer trade. A minimal bump in payment. Dealer A may not trade if people are showing interest in it or if it’s something they just dont care to. I would make sure I’ve exhausted Dealer A first. It doesn’t hurt to ask the other dealers if they have anything similar coming in soon.
My statement was more of a hypothetical. So it could be color/trim/packages etc. Just was curious to get more info if you spec out a vehicle that isn’t widely available. Seems like you can get stuck dealing with a smaller number of dealers which may hurt the bargaining power.
You need to compare apples to apples, so if you want a car with a certain color/package combo find that car from multiple dealers and get a quote on the exact stock/vin number.
