Fellow hackers-not sure where to go from here, as I feel no matter what I put in to change the deal up-it ends up the same. I know VW GTI models do not lease well, so a purchase is where I started here with the dealer. I recently received this initial quote in NV. VW GTI SE model AT
MSRP-$39,146
Discount-$4,135
Sale Price-$35,011
Trade-$0
Aftermarkets-$2294-and yes I do know the discount is in reality $1,841. Told them to take it off-and they refused saying it shows it in the total discount-a topic for another day. I will be asking for more.
Trade Difference-$37,305
Doc Fee-$699
License and Fees-28.25
State/Local Taxes-$3,183
Zero $ down to get a baseline
Total 41,215
@72 months zero down $665 a month.
Its a starting point however I can’t seem to find much on prices paid for these or avg. discount off. Kind of stuck as what to attack first-so I figured I would ask the professionals. Thank You in advance for all the comments
If this is a purchase, the only thing to attack is the discount off MSRP.
So you prefer to lease, not buy right? It just doesn’t lease well?
It would help to find out what purchase incentives there are to see whether the dealer is actually giving you a discount or if they’re just applying a VW purchase incentive, then you’ll know how serious they are about discounting this. Edmunds has that info.
Let me get this straight. You’re paying a total of 72 x 665 = 47880 on a car with an MSRP = 39146 and SP = 35011? That’s horrible and would be a very bad financial decision. Check LH marketplace and signed deals and tips. Do your due diligence and do the research.
Don’t allow the dealer to control the deal. If you choose to lease, I recommend that you craft a lease proposal (example below) and email it to the sales manager (SM), not a floor salesperson as they’re often order takers and lack knowledge.
All numbers should be accurate otherwise, you’ll lose credibility. Negotiate via phone/email. Once an agreement is reached, ask the dealer for a review copy of the lease agreement and all contract addenda BEFORE you go to the dealer and sign. Moreover, it’s helpful to know the terms and conditions of the lease contract such as early termination liability criteria and purchase option criteria as well as lease amortization methodology and excess wear/tear criteria. If all is as agreed, tell the SM that you’ll come in to sign right away. You don’t want any surprises or dealer excuses like …. Oh, we made a mistake. That’s unacceptable and shouldn’t be tolerated.
If the dealer isn’t transparent or is uncooperative or showing signs of incompetence, WALK AWAY AND MOVE ON!
Leasing is time-consuming and requires a good deal of study and attention to detail. If you don’t have the time to commit, perhaps your best alternative is a good broker. There are some outstanding brokers on this website. However, if you’re willing to commit your time and resources, always control the deal. That can only be achieved with education which breeds confidence and increases the likelihood of success.
??? Let me know.
Its either a low APR option or a 2K discount. It seems the APR is the better way to go in my situation.
I thought so as well until they muddied up the aftermarket pkg amount and added into the discount leaving the discount to only be approx $1800. Its 4% on the calculator, but when I asked for more discount I received this is a GTI discounts are hard to come by from 1 of the salespeople. Like I was asking for a freee vehicle
What’s the APR on this?
You can lease a BMW 330i for a lower payment. Although you don’t own anything at the end of 3 years you drive a much nicer vehicle. Is that the payment with the low APR?
Correct, I agree to everything said and I did see the same totals you provided. I live in a state without a large amount of dealers, and/or they are all owned by the same company. I do not see any brokers for VWs in NV in the broker section here. CA is out of the question as they are CA specific deals-and will not deal with me. When I searched for GTI deals here, they seem to be outdated(around covid), unless I am looking in the wrong place. I hate to say its daunting-but it is dealing with all the emails back and forth for a few hundred dollars here and there. I am not against fighting for it, but the dealers here nickel and dime the consumer to death. Just trying to learn more and more from LH so I can walk in/email the dealer, and be prepared for every BS thing they can come up with.
4.9% is what they have listed as the promo APR for 72 months. 60 mos. at 3.9%
I would love to say yes to this, but in NV the BMW dealers are the absolute worst to deal with, and I have had to report them to the BBB for a deal that they went back on in 2018.
Any brokers that work in NV? I would appreciate the info, as I didn’t see any in topics.
You need a much larger net discount. After the doc fee you’re getting like $1,100
Check all the VW forums plus Edmunds’ prices paid forum to see what to target.
Once you’re at a discount you’re happy with, take the 3.9% 60m APR
Thank you for the info, I do appreciate it.
Dealer willing to take another 1K off of this MSRP. Where should I be % wise off the original MSRP? Is there a way to find that out? Also the car has been sitting as all the GTI’s are here in NV due to no flexibility of price or VW incentives. This one has been sitting for 41/2 months. Ant info is always appreciated. Thank You.
What about VW dealers in Arizona, Idaho, Utah, and Oregon?
You could likely work a much better deal outside of the dealer rip offs of Vegas and Reno, and then simply drive to the other state with another person or take a cheap flight one way and drive it back.
If you plan on keeping the GTI for a while, financing is the way to go and you might be able to do better on those rates with a credit union. As an all around car and if you could only have one as a DD, a four-door GTI is extremely hard to beat when it comes to utility, value and performance with the sedan/hatchback combo.
I have looked and priced in AZ and CA, CA was unwilling to do a deal over the border at 3 different VW dealers, and AZ dealers did not want to give me an emailed breakdown of the cars. Utah has the same issue or not wanting to deal acroos states, and some are owned by the same dealer families as the NV ones. Ill check Idaho and OR, any ones you have dealt with personally? I was going to see if there is a broker that is willing to do something, but I do not see any that work with VW?
If youre purchasing, id expand your search in CA. Reach out to more dealers. 3 is nothing, theres way more.
Ok thank you.
For sure. I don’t believe there is any blanket prohibition from VW for a California dealer selling their cars out of state. It may take OP some time, but there’s always a dealer willing to deal on a car that you want, and selling something to someone out of state is not that complicated. Leasing might be a different matter altogether because of restrictions on incentives that only apply to leases.
I have not bought a VW from outside of California, but I’ve bought plenty of other cars from outside of California. There are a million VW dealers in California and you’ll just need to do some legwork via email to find one that will play ball on a GTI to your liking.
