Negotiating a Vehicle for the First Time!

Hi

I am currently in talks with multiple dealerships, but the cheapest msrp I found was a dealership in NJ regarding the Sportage Hybrid EX (MSRP at 33,000) or the SX-Prestige (MSRP at 38,500). I am in NY and was wondering how one can negotiate below MSRP. Would I also be able to negotiate the APR?

This is my first time negotiating and getting my first car. I asked for the invoice price for the vehicle, but they replied that they didn’t have it, which I thought was sketchy. Nevertheless, I’m trying to get the best possible price for the vehicle as I will finance it and put money down.

Thank You!

Your best bet is to do your research ahead of time to establish what a market supported selling price actually is. You need go know where youre trying to get to before you can effectively negotiate.

The dealer certainly can tell you what invoice is, but it doesnt really matter. If the vehicle youre targetting goes for over msrp, the invoice doesnt help you. Likewise, if it goes for way under msrp, invoice would be way overpaying.

^This.

but…

I am all for you making it happen with your first purchase, but it might help if you had a wingman that knows what he/she is doing to be there with you as well.

I can try :man_shrugging:

Yes, I researched how much the dealership possibly bought it for, which is about 31,000.

This is irrelevant

on a Sportage Hybrid you are going to be negotiating the markup amount. No one gets them for under MSRP, even MSRP would be truly exceptional

3k over in PA for a plug in or normal hybrid. Not enough Long Island ice tea to make me want to try that.

@JSL
Just quick calculatation spending $3k over sticker vs regular nonhybrid Sportage.
Making 10k miles a year saving on a gas i minimal. I would need to keep this car 5 years to break even ( not accounting sales tax and interest).

Lol so ny $484/month deal isn’t looking so bad after all! Y’all were dissing on me…the car is hot.
