Need to help MIL buy, not lease, a car

My MIL’s car finally died after a good 20 years of service, and she calls me insisting that she wants a Prius (never having driven or sat in one) because of CR and her friend.

I haven’t bought a car off a dealer (Tesla doesn’t count), and am wondering what tips people might have. She wants to pay cash for it (well, check!)…but I’ve heard that if you finance/immediately pay off you can often get a better deal?

I convinced her to at least look at a few different cars first, and am driving over to Van Nuys Blvd to check them out later with her.

Also, are there any similar smallish cars that are being discounted right now? She doesn’t want American cars, and German ones are probably too pricey.

Thanks.

I think the only advantage in lease w/ an immediate buyout for a Prius is when you’re looking at the Prius Prime specifically…?

You can check the Marketplace to see which brokers (and there’s def at least one) who works w/ Toyota, Kia/Hyundai, and Honda.

@Jeff_BeachCitiesAuto may be a good source…he deals in multiple brands I believe (lease or purchase)

If you do a Prius Prime, it’s better to lease and then immediately purchase.

We’ve helped a lot of people on LH. Take a look here.

Message me and I can suggest what makes the most sense

Camry Hybrid would be a better discount than Prius if sticking with Toyota, Im doing $2000 or more dealer discount off MSRP on a purchase and no broker fee in Socal

Thanks everyone.

MIL didn’t like Prius (cramped, low roof), and Camry Hybrid 25 seemed really plasticy and cheap on inside too.

She ended up with a Subaru Legacy Limited…base motor is underpowered, but at nearly 90, I don’t think it matters!
