My daily commute just went from 0 to 3-4 hours - what’s the current status of autonomous cars?

Mainly here to rant - but my office is now forcing those of us who have been 100% remote for years to come into the office at least 3-4 days a week.

Seriously contemplating switching to a car that could possibly semi-autonomously drive the route for me so I can save the little amount of hair I have left.

The commute is ~ 30 miles each way, 85% highway. Charging only available at home. Travel time each way is ~ 1 hr on a good day, over 2 hr on a bad day.

I know Tesla has the FSD beta, and BMW has traffic assist, but what cars could be a viable option to help me out with this drive?

Sounds like a lot of bumper to bumper, I like BMW’s DA Pro w Highway Assistant for hands free.

Pilot assist on the volvo or super cruise on caddy

I commute 1 hour each way in some bumper to bumper traffic. One pedal driving and autopilot was a dream on the tesla.

Was this your commute before Rona?

I’d look for a new job, FSD won’t be here anytime soon.

Or at least a room rental closer to the office, with parking. Drive in Tue morning, stay Tue/Wed night, drive home Thu afternoon

You will have to pay me $$$ for that setup, but second that BMW DA Pro and Tesla TACC will help a lot.

Agreed. That is just silly and very 2003 Bay Area-ish.

Depends on how bad OP wants the job, and doesn’t have to be permanent. After a month of that commute 12 times, cutting it to 4 times will be an improvement.

OP should also double check their car insurance coverage matched what one would expect with a commute like that, should they have made any cuts as rates increased.

No Bay Area company that was serious allowed only 3 days a week in the office for key personnel, even after the .BOMB explosion. Every company I dealt with (1998-2018) big and small, was 5 days a week or GTFO and find another job.

I had a friend that commuted from Modesto into San Jose like 15 years ago. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I know a few people who does exactly what @jeisensc said, one guy stayed at his in-laws for 4 nights a week, then he started going to card room and playing poker during those nights, just don’t be that guy.

There were plenty of companies that allowed peeps to work 3-4 days in the office, some around the clock even. All options, meager pay, no benefits and code, code, code and grind, grind, grind.

Ask me how I know this, while you were living in Ohio or wherever it was at the time?

No - we moved after Covid (with management permission), but corporate mandated that unless we were initially hired as remote we all need to be in the office again.

Ive started brushing up the resume and plan to find something either closer or that’s exclusively remote, but in the meantime I need to figure out how to make this work. My line of work isn’t huge in this area, so my options are somewhat limited and I expect it to potentially take a while to find something.

My commute was a good bit worse than that for years (Palmdale to Redondo Beach). I did much of it using volvo propilot assist and hyundai highway drive assist. Both made things a lot more manageable.

Nah, I’ve got young kids and would rather have the commute then not be home for dinner/bedtime.

Aero?

Yup. Having a kid put a quick end to doing that commute, which meant moving out of CA. Absolutely worth getting away from that crap.

It is, Atlanta traffic is a nightmare. Is the BMW DA Pro completely hands off? I will 100% still be paying attention, but if I could let my hands rest off that wheel that would at least be more comfortable.
